Summary

'Growing Up Fast' explores the unprecedented challenges facing modern teenagers as they navigate an accelerated path to adulthood, shaped by technological advancement and evolving social pressures. The book examines adolescent development through three interconnected lenses: biological changes during puberty, psychological transformation in identity formation, and the complex social dynamics that influence teenage development.

Drawing from three decades of research (1990-2020), it presents compelling evidence showing how today's adolescents face a more complex developmental landscape than previous generations. The book uniquely combines traditional developmental psychology with cutting-edge neuroscience research, revealing how hormonal changes affect teenage decision-making and risk assessment.

Through an accessible blend of clinical case studies and large-scale research data, readers gain insight into crucial topics such as the acceleration of physical maturation, the impact of digital technology on identity formation, and the evolving dynamics of family relationships during adolescence. Each chapter builds systematically from biological foundations to psychological development and social implications, making complex concepts understandable for parents and educators.

What sets this book apart is its practical approach to modern challenges, particularly addressing how social media and technology influence teenage development. It offers evidence-based strategies for parents, educators, and healthcare providers while maintaining a balanced perspective on controversial topics. The book concludes each chapter with actionable guidelines for supporting healthy adolescent development, making it both a theoretical resource and a practical guide for anyone involved in teenage development and care.

This program includes a bonus conversation between the author and editor.Volodymyr Zelensky captivated the world when his country was invaded by Russia in February 2022. His appearances were accompanied by countless inspiring statements. But there's a single one that informs Unlocking Your Inner Zelensky: "We are all simple people."Jessie Kanzer sees Zelensky as a Spiritual Leader for Our Times. As a native Russian speaker (like Zelensky himself), she picks up on the deep philosophical ramifications behind his words. Rich and yet easily understood, the life lessons in Unlocking Your Inner Zelensky are accessible and wise, and are more about starting where you are than about war.Kanzer herself has a bit part in Zelensky's life story, acting in one of his movies filmed in the States. She's a self-described "spiritual nerd" who followed Zelensky long before he stood before a blue and yellow backdrop on the national stage. She writes, "What is so incredible about our man Volodymyr is that his belief in himself stems not from seeing himself as special, but from seeing himself as ordinary and from knowing there is great power in this ordinariness."A Macmillan Audio production from St. Martin's Press Essentials.

This book provides a full guide to creating and running an intensive treatment program for youth with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).

There is a rapidly growing interest in brief intensive treatment modalities in both clinical and research settings. Intensive treatment for OCD condenses evidence-based interventions into more patient contact hours per week than standard weekly therapy, and is widely supported as an efficient, effective, and desirable treatment option. Intensive treatment can be widely applicable to different patient groups, including those with more severe symptoms for whom weekly therapy is not sufficient, and those who have mild or moderate symptoms but do not have access to evidence-based treatments in their geographic region. Despite broad interest in developing concentrated treatment programs for OCD, practitioners face several challenges when trying to launch and maintain these programs. This book will provide a comprehensive guide covering the topics of import for clinicians, researchers, and administrators, across different types of institutions and care settings, who want to build an intensive treatment program into their clinical practice across different types of institutions and care settings.

This book explores how polarized interpretations of America's past influence the present and vice versa. A focus on competing Protestant reactions to President Trump's "Make America Great Again" slogan evidences a fundamental divide over how America should remember historical racism, sexism, and exploitation. Additionally, these Protestants disagree over how the past influences present injustice and equality. The 2020 killing of George Floyd forced these rival histories into the open. Rowley proposes that recovering a complex view of the past, confessing the bad and embracing the good, might help Americans have a shared memory that can bridge polarization and work to secure justice and equality.

An accessible and timely book, this is essential for those concerned with the vexed relationship of religion and politics in the United States, including students and scholars in the fields of Protestantism, history, political science, religious studies, and sociology.

Alfred Thayer Mahan is arguably the most influential military strategist in American history, and one of the world’s most important naval theorists. His work has been nearly as influential as the famous German military theorist Carl von Clausewitz (1780-1831), and the lesser-known but nearly as influential Swiss military writer Antoine-Henri Jomini (1779-1869).
Alfred decided to go to the Naval Academy in Annapolis, which he was admitted to via the influence of Secretary of War Jefferson Davis. He graduated in 1859 and started a career lasting almost 40 years. He served aboard a wide variety of ships, from a powerful frigate under sail to a variety of steam sloops, corvettes, and gunboats, many of which were side wheelers and all of which had auxiliary sails.
He started as a Midshipman and worked his way up the naval ranks to Captain and Commander. He also had several independent commands. He was stationed off the Atlantic Coast and in the Gulf of Mexico during the Union blockade of the Confederacy. He was on a sidewheeler tasked with keeping an eye on the French in Mexico, where Napoleon II had installed a Hapsburg archduke as emperor. He spent more than two years on station in the Far East, spent a couple of years with the South Atlantic Squadron based in Montevideo in Uruguay, and then a year off the west coast of South America, in a ship observing events during the War of the Pacific.
After a lengthy naval career, Mahan had assignments at the Naval Academy and the Brooklyn Naval Yard. He was invited to lecture at the Naval War College, and it was there that he collected together his notes and wrote a book, The Influence of Naval Power upon History, which somehow became an international bestseller in 1890. His book resulted in an invitation to dine with the Queen in Britain. It was translated into German and the Kaiser ordered a copy be placed on every German warship and in every school.
