Sinopsis

World Birth Trends explores the complex factors influencing childbirth preferences globally, examining why birth locations vary drastically. It highlights how cultural norms, socioeconomic status, and healthcare accessibility shape these decisions. For instance, the book analyzes the 20th-century shift to hospital births in industrialized nations and the ongoing preference for home births in many developing countries due to limited access or cultural practices.

The approach is interdisciplinary, blending public health, sociology, and economics to understand maternal health disparities. It uses data from sources like WHO and UNICEF alongside ethnographic studies, offering a unique holistic perspective.

The book progresses from fundamental concepts to examining trends in high-income countries, then low- and middle-income countries, and finally analyzes global data to propose recommendations for maternal healthcare policy.

The tank was first developed by the British and French during World War I as a means to break the deadlock on the Western Front. More so than any previous war, the balance of power lay with the defense, as machine guns, trenches, bunkers, barbed wire, and rapid-firing rifles all made frontal assaults on established positions prohibitively costly. In the closing months of the war, the tank partially evened up that balance, even as the war’s commanders initially proved unsure of how to use them. While it cannot be said that the tank won the war, it contributed to its end and if the fighting had continued another year, the mass production that had started in Allied countries may have proved decisive.
World War II was the culmination of a quarter century of tank development, and it would also be the first major test of tanks in mobile warfare during which they had to face other tanks. However, many of the tanks were constructed with the static warfare of the Western Front in mind and were thus slow and had short operational ranges. Others were too light to face opposing tanks or the new generation of anti-tank weapons that hadn’t existed in World War I. The unsuitability of these tank models for this new kind of warfare was quickly recognized, and the belligerent powers scrambled to create better designs. As each new, improved model came off the assembly lines, the opposing powers rushed to create a tank that could beat it. In that regard, World War II was also a war between rival engineers.
The beginning of World War II found the major powers developing tanks to some extent, but lingering ideas from World War I affected the development of tanks during the Interwar period.

I had heard tales of women with secret knowledge and powers, but I never imagined that there would be one standing right in front of me.“You’re a Völva?” the word rolled off my tongue strangely...I only knew faintly what a Völva was. They were said to be strange women with strange powers. Not only could they protect and ward against ill omens, but they could also travel the realms and reach into places untapped by most humans. As such, they were often spoken of in whispers of both reverence and mystery.“Yes, I am. And an old one at that,” she said, getting up from her chair. It seemed so casual as if she was just talking about a mindless chore that she was doing. Like it was nothing special that she had just performed some form of magic right in front of me.For two years, I learned everything I could on runes, protections, herbs, medicines, and anything else that Dagmar deemed necessary. In the few moments I had that were not dedicated to lessons from Dagmar, I would seek out Ivar for his quiet presence. There was just something about being near him that set my mind at ease. All that consumed my thoughts was avengement and how close Ulrik was. Soon he would taste the bitter sting of defeat. In the realms of Norse Mythology, a girl sets out to avenge her village, only to meet a powerful teacher on her journey into the abyss of forbidden knowledge.

Feudalism emerged in Western Europe as a response to the collapse of centralized authority following the fall of the Roman Empire. As Roman institutions crumbled in the 5th century, Europe descended into a period of instability and fragmentation. Without the protection and infrastructure once provided by Rome, people turned to local leaders for safety and organization. These leaders—often wealthy landowners or military figures—became the foundation of a new social and political structure that emphasized land ownership, loyalty, and mutual obligation.
The early roots of feudal practices can be traced to the relationships that formed during this chaotic period. In the absence of a strong central government, powerful individuals began offering protection to those around them in exchange for service or labor. Over time, this informal system developed into a structured hierarchy, with clearly defined roles and responsibilities. Lords granted land, known as fiefs, to their vassals, who in return pledged loyalty and military support. This mutual dependency became the backbone of medieval society and formalized the relationships that had organically formed during the earlier periods of uncertainty.
Localized power became the defining feature of feudal Europe. With no single empire to unify the continent, authority became decentralized. Kings often ruled in name only, while real control rested in the hands of regional lords and nobles. These lords governed their own territories, enforced laws, and maintained private armies. In turn, they depended on the support of lesser vassals and knights, who managed smaller portions of land and fulfilled military duties. This layered structure ensured that each level of society relied on those above and below, creating a rigid yet stable social order.

From the creator of “a unified field theory of racism” (NPR’s Planet Money), a dollars-and-cents reckoning of the state of Black America and a new framework to close the power gap Historically, Black Americans’ quest for power has been understood as an attempt to gain equal protections under the law. But power in America requires more than basic democratic freedoms. It is inextricably linked with economic influence and ownership—of one’s self, home, business, and creations. Andre M. Perry draws on extensive research and analysis to quantify how much power Black Americans actually have. Ranging from property, business, and wealth to education, health, and social mobility, Black Power Scorecard moves across the country, evaluating people’s ability to set the rules of the game and calculating how that translates into the ultimate means of power—life itself, and the longevity of Black communities. Along the way, Perry identifies woefully overlooked areas of investment that could close the racial gap and benefit everyone. An expansive take on power supported by documentation and data, Black Power Scorecard is a fresh contribution to the country’s reckoning with structural inequality, one that offers a new approach to redressing it.A Macmillan Audio production from Metropolitan Books.
