Summary

"Emotions leap off the page in this deeply personal book . . . . Expertly written."--Library Journal

***

The best fiction simply tells the truth.
But the truth is never simple.

When novelist Kendra Brennan moves into her grandfather's old cabin on Hidden Lake, she has a problem and a plan. The problem? An inflammatory letter from A Very Disappointed Reader. The plan? To confront Tyler, her childhood best friend's brother--and the man who inspired the antagonist in her first book. If she can prove that she told the truth about what happened during those long-ago summers, perhaps she can put the letter's claims to rest and meet the swiftly approaching deadline for her next book.

But what she discovers as she delves into the murky past is not what she expected. While facing Tyler isn't easy, facing the consequences of her failed friendship with his sister, Cami, may be the hardest thing she's ever had to do.

Plumb the depths of the human heart with this emotional exploration of how a friendship dies, how we can face the unforgivable, and how even those who have been hurt can learn to love with abandon.

"Bartels explores troubled relationships, questions of truth and memory, and how stories are created and told."--Booklist

"Erin Bartels has become one of those authors that I read every book she writes without even reading the synopsis or looking at the cover. The stories are just that good and the tension and internal conflict her characters have intensified with each story. The Girl Who Can Breathe Under Water is no exception."--Write-Read-Life

"Erin Bartels skillfully weaves threads of love, hope, forgiveness, and restoration in a tapestry that also portrays abuse, despair, hatred, and brokenness. Subtly and effectively, Bartels sets her novel on the foundation of Christian hope and God's sovereignty over all things."--The Banner

"Bartels continues to amaze and this--at least until the next book--is her best. It's a bit early in the year to be talking about awards and accolades, but I'm not convinced it's premature. Truly, an outstanding book."--Life Is Story

Amy Levy was born in London, England in 1861, the second of seven in a fairly wealthy Anglo-Jewish family. The children read and participated in secular literary activities and became firmly integrated into Victorian life.
Her education was at Brighton High School, Brighton, before studies at Newnham College, Cambridge; she was the first Jewish student when she arrived in 1879, but left after four terms.
Amy’s writing career began early; her poem ‘Ida Grey’ appeared when she was only fourteen. Her acclaimed short stories ‘Cohen of Trinity’ and ‘Wise in Their Generation,’ were published by Oscar Wilde in his magazine ‘Women's World’.
Her poetic writings reveal feminist concerns; ‘Xantippe and Other Verses’, from 1881 includes a poem in the voice of Socrates's wife. ‘A Minor Poet and Other Verse’ from 1884 comprises of dramatic monologues and lyric poems.
In 1886, Amy began a series of essays on Jewish culture and literature for the Jewish Chronicle, including ‘The Ghetto at Florence’, ‘The Jew in Fiction’, ‘Jewish Humour’ and ‘Jewish Children’.
That same year while travelling in Florence she met the writer Vernon Lee. It is generally assumed they fell in love and this inspired the poem ‘To Vernon Lee’.
Her first novel ‘Romance of a Shop’, written in 1888 is based on four sisters who experience the pleasures and hardships of running a London business during the 1880s. This was followed by Reuben Sachs (also 1888) and concerned with Jewish identity and mores in the England of her time and was somewhat controversial.
Her final book of poems, ‘A London Plane-Tree’ from 1889, shows the beginnings of the influence of French symbolism.
Despite many friendships and an active life, Amy suffered for many years with serious depressions and this, together with her growing deafness, led her to commit suicide by inhaling carbon monoxide on September 10th, 1889. She was 27.

"Why would my boss want someone as young and broken as me for his boy? But the way he looks at me . . . "

Levi has seen more life than anyone his age should have. He's responsible for more than anyone knows. The weight on his shoulders is crippling, but he'd do anything for his family.

When Christian hired Levi, all he saw was a young man with a wound on his face so recent that it hadn't healed yet and desperation in his eyes. He didn't know his story, but he didn't need to. One of the reasons he'd opened The Tap Tavern was to give people who needed a safe place to land a job—a home away from home.

Christian swore to himself he'd never date an employee, but then he's never had one quite like Levi. Levi never planned to trust anyone to help him carry his load, least of all a marshmallow of a Daddy. When unfortunate events force these two men to share a house, will they be able to resist what's been brewing between them right there under the surface?
