Herman Melville
Nasceu em 1819, em Nova Iorque, numa família de comerciantes. Deixou a escola aos 12 anos e nunca andou na universidade. Em 1839, sem emprego, aceitou trabalhar a bordo do St. Lawrence, um navio que fazia a carreira entre Nova Iorque e Liverpool. Viajou noutros navios mercantes e participou na caça à baleia no Pacífico, chegando a arpoador. Desertou de um desses barcos e foi capturado por canibais, na Polinésia.
