Summary

"Medical Ethics Dilemmas" offers a comprehensive exploration of the moral challenges shaping modern healthcare, where advancing technology and human values increasingly intersect. The book expertly navigates three fundamental tensions: the balance between patient autonomy and medical paternalism, the challenge of distributing limited healthcare resources fairly, and the struggle between innovative treatments and established medical protocols. Through a systematic examination of real-world cases and established guidelines, it demonstrates how healthcare providers tackle complex decisions that impact both individual lives and society at large.

The book's unique approach lies in its practical framework for ethical decision-making, bridging theoretical principles with real-world healthcare delivery. Beginning with individual patient rights and professional obligations, it progresses through societal-level healthcare distribution before addressing cutting-edge ethical frontiers in experimental treatments and genetic medicine. Each section integrates compelling case studies and established ethical frameworks, making complex concepts accessible to both healthcare professionals and general readers interested in bioethics.

Moving beyond theoretical discussions, the text provides concrete tools for implementing ethical decision-making processes across various healthcare settings. By examining how cultural shifts, technological capabilities, and economic pressures have transformed medical ethics since the Hippocratic Oath, it offers readers a thorough understanding of contemporary challenges while maintaining an objective stance on controversial topics such as end-of-life care and genetic modification. This balanced approach makes it an invaluable resource for medical professionals, healthcare administrators, and policy makers who must navigate complex ethical dilemmas in their daily work.

A hopeful memoir about adapting when life doesn't go to plan, redefining family, and creating your own path.

One afternoon, Emma Nadler gets a call from her daughter's doctor that changes her life forever. Faced with the realities of raising a child with a rare genetic condition, Nadler must confront her preconceptions of motherhood and her perfectionistic beliefs.

Nadler—who also happens to be a psychotherapist—offers a rare window into the unconventional ways she and her family adapt to their improbable path. Every relationship in her life—with herself, her husband, children, friends, and even clients—is reimagined as she navigates the heartbreak and hilarity of her daily life.

As she and her husband join the 53 million caregivers in the US, Nadler wrestles to belong in a society that devalues both caregivers and people with disabilities. She challenges the scripts that mothers should be martyrs, or that self-sacrifice is a necessary component of love. Nadler illustrates the complexity, grief, and joy of living an unexpected life, all with the wisdom of a therapist, the heart of a loving parent, and the ingenuity of a queer woman who refuses to be shackled by cultural expectations.

"As a major fan and promoter of Julian of Norwich, whom I call 'my favorite mystic', it is genuinely exciting to find such a faithful but freeing translation of Julian's long-lost Showings. Now they are no longer lost—for anyone!"—Fr. Richard Rohr, O.F.M., Center for Action and Contemplation
In this contemporary translation of one of the most beloved and influential mystical texts of all time, Julian of Norwich: The Showings brings the message and spirituality of this 14th-century mystic to 21st-century readers. Revelations of Divine Love, the first book published in English attributed to a woman, is also included.
Julian of Norwich, a contemporary of Geoffrey Chaucer, was an English anchoress in East Anglia. At the age of 30, suffering from a severe illness and believing she was on her deathbed, Julian had a series of intense visions of Jesus, which she recorded and then expanded on later in her life. In her visions, God was not angry and wrathful. Instead, the three properties of God were presented as life, love, and light, and all of His creation was good, including his servant, man. In Julian's version, man is not to blame for his sin; sin is something that he must experience and overcome in his spiritual journey with God.
Her message for today's readers is simply this:
She reveals the feminine face of the Divine and reminds us to see God there. All our failings are an opportunity to learn and grow; they should be honored, but not dwelled upon.God's love has nothing to do with love and retribution and everything to do with love and compassion. In spite of all appearances, all is well. This book contains some of the most profound spiritual writing ever written and remains a perennial favorite among Christians.
This book was previously published as The Showings of Julian of Norwich. This new edition includes a foreword by Richard Rohr, author of Falling Upwards.

"Self-Reliance" is an 1841 essay written by American transcendentalist philosopher and essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson. It contains the most thorough statement of one of Emerson's recurrent themes: the need for each individual to avoid conformity and false consistency, and follow his own instincts and ideas. It is the source of one of Emerson's most famous quotations: "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines.
Emerson focuses on seemingly insignificant details explaining how life is "learning and forgetting and learning again".

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a powerful general-purpose technology that is reshaping the modern economy, but misperceptions about AI stand in the way of harnessing it for the betterment of humanity. In Thrive, Ravi Bapna and Anindya Ghose counter the backlash by showcasing how AI is positively influencing the aspects of our daily lives that we care about most: our health and wellness, relationships, education, the workplace, and domestic life. In the process the authors help explain the underlying technology and give people the agency they need to shape the debate around how we should regulate AI to maximize its benefits and minimize its risks.

Bringing over two decades of experience with cutting-edge research, consulting, executive coaching, and advising to bear on the subject, Bapna and Ghose demystify the technology of AI itself. They offer a novel "House of AI" framework that encompasses traditional analytics, generative AI, and fair and ethical deployment of AI. Using examples from everyday life, they showcase how the modern AI-powered ecosystem fundamentally improves the emotional, physical, and material well-being of regular people across the globe. Thrive's mission is to educate the public about AI, shape realistic expectations, and foster informed discussions about a fast-emerging AI-shaped society.

Did you know that Viking-age Swedes were the founding dynasty of what eventually became Russia?

In contrast to their Danish and Norwegian cousins, Swedish Vikings traveled east rather than west in search of riches, land, and power. The extensive river systems of Russia provided economic and military "super-highways" to the adventurers from the north, who journeyed down them all the way to the Black Sea and Constantinople in search of fame and riches.

The rise in TV shows and movies has renewed people's interest in Vikings, but the Swedish Vikings have been notably absent from these accounts. In Captivating History's History of Sweden, you will learn more about these Swedish adventurers, along with other parts of Sweden's fascinating history.

In this book, you will discover:

    -  The Swedes' fierce struggle to gain independence
    -  The "Father of Sweden," King Gustav Vasa, and his dynasty spawned some of the greatest military minds in Europe
    -  How the Swedish Empire achieved success and expanded as far as North America
    -  Sweden's revolutionary war tactics and how they led to victories on the battlefield
    -  Why Sweden adopted its famous policy of neutrality
    -  The hero Raoul Wallenberg and his role in WWII
