Sinopsis

In 1924, the Virginia State Legislature passed the Racial Integrity Act. The act banned interracial marriage down to "a single drop" of African blood. Just three months later, Curtis W. Harris was born in Dendron, Virginia. Harris was the sixth child of impoverished sharecroppers, living in a desolate outpost of the Commonwealth, but in time he would lead the fight against the Racial Integrity Act and many other racially restrictive laws. Despite being arrested multiple times and beaten, Rev. Harris would help reverse centuries of racial discrimination that began when slaves first arrived in Virginia in 1619. Author William Paul Lazarus tells the story of Harris' determination in the face of intense hostility, which took him to the forefront of America's Civil Rights Movement, arm-in-arm with the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

As Dede Montgomery moves through grief to accept the death of her father, the stories in My Music Man shed light on change, acceptance, and forgiveness amid close personal relationships and Oregon’s natural landscapes. The reader is catapulted into autumn on the Willamette’s riverbank in the 1960s with the author and her brothers, where they discover their father’s own childhood stories and the intimate relationship he shares with the land. Tales about seven generations of family weave between time periods, held together by the constancy of place and colored by memories of picking berries and filberts, traveling through the West Linn locks, and swimming in the river on a hot summer day. Montgomery describes small-town life in a school where everyone knows everybody, and how it felt to be an only girl in what often felt like a never-ending sea of boys. Chapters depict stories about place, seasons, gender, relationships and recovery. This book is to be savored. Yet it's much more than a memoir - it's a multi-generational story, lovingly told, of a family deeply tied to Oregon's history. Historical Influences - How...

Jewish culture and identity are deeply rooted in ancient history, shaped by significant events, traditions, and teachings that continue to influence contemporary Jewish life. From biblical narratives to the Second Temple period, these early foundations laid the groundwork for Jewish beliefs, customs, and communal structures.
The impact of biblical narratives is one of the most defining aspects of Jewish history. The Torah, regarded as the cornerstone of Jewish faith and law, provides a historical and spiritual framework that has guided Jewish life for millennia. Stories of the patriarchs, such as Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, emphasize themes of faith, covenant, and resilience. The Exodus story, recounting the Israelites’ liberation from Egypt, remains a central symbol of perseverance and divine intervention, shaping Jewish festivals like Passover and reinforcing the concept of Jewish unity. The laws and ethical teachings in the Torah continue to influence Jewish traditions, values, and social practices.
Jewish identity in the ancient world was shaped by interactions with surrounding civilizations. Living in lands governed by powerful empires such as Egypt, Babylon, Persia, and Rome, Jewish communities maintained their distinct religious and cultural practices while also adapting to changing political and social landscapes. The Babylonian Exile in the 6th century BCE was a turning point, as it not only led to the destruction of the First Temple but also forced Jews to develop new ways of preserving their heritage in foreign lands. This period saw the rise of synagogue worship and the emphasis on textual study, both of which remain central to Jewish life today.
