Synopsis

This edition includes the following editor's introduction: Willa Cather, an analysis of the literature of a free and empowered woman

First published in 1918, "My Ántonia" is a novel by American writer Willa Cather and is considered one of her best works.

Set in the Midwestern Nebraska frontier in the late 19th century, "My Ántonia" tells the stories of an orphaned boy from Virginia and the novel's American-born narrator, Jim Burden, and the elder daughter in a family of Bohemian immigrants, Ántonia Shimerda, who are each brought as children to be pioneers in Nebraska. The first year in the very new place leaves strong impressions on both children, affecting them for life. The story is told as Jim relates his own image of Ántonia in a nostalgic re-creation of his childhood and youth.

This portrait of Ántonia is widely acknowledged as one of the most memorable characters in twentieth-century literature. Through her, Cather celebrates the vitality and fruitfulness of the pioneering era as a type of lost paradise. “My Ántonia” is widely considered the best of the author's novels which reflect her childhood experiences growing up on the plains. Cather was praised for bringing the American West to life and making it personally interesting. Since its appearance, Cather's carefully crafted fiction has gathered a steady following. Her reputation has continued to grow since her death in 1947.
“My Ántonia” is a deep and insightful read that is well worth the time invested.

Samuel H. M. Byers was an American poet, diplomat, and soldier in the Civil War. "In war some persons seek adventures; others have them in spite of themselves. It happened that the writer of this book belonged to a regiment that seemed to be always in the midst of great experiences. It was, in fact, one of the few regiments that absolutely fought themselves out of existence. It was mustered in a thousand strong; it lost seven hundred and seventy-seven men by death, wounds, and disease. The fragment that was left over was transferred to a cavalry command. When the writer finally escaped from prison, after many months of confinement and many thrilling adventures both in prison and in the army of the enemy, he was mustered out as a "supernumerary officer." His command had ceased to exist. He was literally the last man of the regiment. He kept a diary every day in the four years of war and adventure. The substance of the facts related here is from its pages; occasionally they are copied just as they are there set down. The book is not a history of great army movements, it is simply a true tale of the thrilling experiences of a subordinate soldier in the midst of great events." (Summary from the Preface)

The official story is a carefully constructed lie. Beneath the lurid headlines of the most shocking crimes of the century lies a labyrinth of buried evidence, manipulated narratives, and powerful institutions with everything to lose. This is not the story you think you know. It is a journey into the heart of American darkness, where the summer of love curdled into a calculated nightmare and the search for truth became a dangerous obsession.
Drawing on two decades of relentless investigation, Ibnul Jaif Farabi reconstructs a shadow history of an era. He follows a trail of suppressed documents, contradictory testimonies, and eerie connections that lead from the sun-bleached canyons of Los Angeles to the clandestine corridors of intelligence agencies. The narrative meticulously examines the failures of law enforcement, the enigmatic web of the killer's influential associates, and the disturbing experiments in behavior modification that form a sinister backdrop to the tragedy.
Listeners will experience a masterful synthesis of true crime investigation and historical detective work. Farabi's compelling narration guides you through a complex web of facts, presenting a riveting case that challenges every accepted conclusion. You will gain a profound understanding of how myths are manufactured, how history is sanitized, and how the pursuit of justice can be subverted by those sworn to uphold it.
