The true life story of one of early twentieth century's baseball legends—a Most Valuable Player and Hall of Famer who was as difficult as he was talented.A relentless competitor, Rogers Hornsby—arguably the finest right-handed hitter in baseball's history—was supremely successful on the baseball field but, in many ways, a failure off it.In this biography, Charles Alexander turns his skilled eye to this complex individual, weaving the stories of his personal and professional life with a lively history of the sport.“Destined to occupy prominent shelf space in baseball's essential library.” —The Sporting News“The author delves into Hornsby's professional and personal life: his relationship with managers Miller Huggins, Branch Rickey and John McGraw; his scandalous affair and subsequent 20-year marriage to a 'flapper'; his personal prohibition on drinking and smoking; his reluctance to watch movies because they might impinge on his eyesight; and his obsession with horse racing-although he never learned to read a racing form. Alexander reviews Hornsby's successful tenure as player-manager of the Cardinals; his subsequent stints with the Giants, Braves, Cubs and Browns; and his career as manager and coach.” —Publishers Weekly

Twenty-six centuries ago, the Buddha fleshed out the universal law of the spiritual realm: karma, which holds that our actions, our words, and even our thoughts inevitably produce effects that return to us in some form — in this lifetime or a future one. In The Beginner’s Guide to Karma, Lama Lhanang Rinpoche and Mordy Levine encourage readers to forget what they’ve heard about karma and look at the subject afresh. Delving into Buddhist scripture and tradition, the authors give a comprehensive overview that incorporates psychology, ethics, and metaphysics. Using everyday language and real-life examples, they clear away myths, illustrate how karma works in daily life, and offer practices to build positive karma. The Beginner’s Guide to Karma neatly sums up the Buddhist worldview and makes a compelling case for a way of being that nurtures compassion, joy, and inner peace in an uncertain world.

Can you imagine how the world would be different today if there had been no Enlightenment era?
The Age of Enlightenment, which lasted throughout the 18th century, brought about fundamental changes in people’s thinking and transformed the entire fabric of society.
Even ordinary people began to question the entrenched beliefs and dogmas. They wanted education, justice, freedom, and progress. They struggled to eliminate despotic rulers and desired to be governed by democratically elected representatives.
But how did this fundamental shift in thinking occur in a relatively short period? And who were the great thinkers and philosophers of that era who dared to go against the established authority of the church and the power of the autocrats? Are you curious about how the Enlightenment influenced the French and American Revolutions?
If so, this audiobook holds the answers you seek. You will also learn about the following:The ideals of the Enlightenment, including reason, individual freedom, and democracy; How the average person viewed the Enlightenment; The philosophy and impact of great thinkers like Rousseau, Locke, Hume, and Voltaire; How the American and French Revolutions brought about changes to the traditional monarchy; The massive progress in education, science, and social justice;A brief look at the Scientific Revolution and the inventions that changed history; The explosive growth of trade and commerce that reduced poverty and created wealth; The remarkable women who stood up for women’s rights; And much, much more!

Depression, also known as major depressive disorder, is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how a person feels, thinks, and acts. It is characterized by persistent feelings of sadness and a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed. Depression can lead to various emotional and physical problems and can decrease a person’s ability to function at work and at home.

Symptoms of depression can be emotional, physical, or cognitive. Emotionally, individuals may experience persistent sadness, anxiety, or a feeling of emptiness. They might also feel hopeless, pessimistic, irritable, guilty, worthless, or helpless. Physically, depression can lead to decreased energy or fatigue, changes in appetite or weight, sleep disturbances, and unexplained aches or pains. Cognitively, those affected may have difficulty concentrating, remembering things, or making decisions. In severe cases, they may have thoughts of death or suicide or even attempt suicide.

The causes of depression are complex and involve a combination of genetic, biological, environmental, and psychological factors. A family history of depression can increase one's risk, as can chemical imbalances in the brain. Stressful life events such as the death of a loved one, divorce, financial problems, or job loss can also trigger depression. Additionally, negative thinking patterns and low self-esteem can contribute to the development of the disorder.
