Summary

Saxo Grammaticus was a twelfth century historian, who composed a heroic history of Denmark, known under its Latin title ‘Gesta Danorum’ (Deeds of the Danes). The first eight books deal with mythical elements such as giants and the Scandinavian pantheon of gods. It tells of Dan the first king of Denmark and his brother Angul, who would give his name to the Angles. Saxo also provides the earliest known source for the revenge story of Amleth, which would later influence Shakespeare’s Hamlet. ‘Gesta Danorum’ remains an incredibly important work of European literature, providing an essential source for Denmark’s early history. Delphi’s Medieval Library provides eReaders with rare and precious works of the Middle Ages, with noted English translations and the original texts. This eBook presents the first nine books of Saxo’s history, as well as the complete Latin text, with illustrations, an informative introduction and the usual Delphi bonus material. (Version 1)

"You can't get away from yourself by moving from one place to another."

In the wake of World War I, a group of disillusioned American and British expatriates drifts through the cafes of Paris, searching for a purpose that the war stripped away. At the center of this circle are Jake Barnes—a journalist left impotent by a war wound—and the captivating, fiercely independent Lady Brett Ashley. Their journey takes them from the jazz-soaked nights of the Rive Gauche to the raw, sun-drenched intensity of the bullfights in Pamplona.

The Iceberg Theory in Action: Hemingway's revolutionary prose is on full display here. Using his "Iceberg Theory," he conveys deep emotional turmoil through sparse, rhythmic dialogue and direct action. Beneath the surface of every drink ordered and every trout caught lies a profound exploration of masculinity, resilience, and the "lost" nature of a youth that survived the trenches only to find a hollow peace.

The Ritual of the Bullring: The novel reaches its crescendo during the Fiesta de San Fermín. Hemingway contrasts the chaotic, drunken revelry of the expatriates with the "purity" and tragic grace of the bullfight. Through the young matador Pedro Romero, Hemingway explores the "grace under pressure" that becomes the only available virtue in a world where traditional moral structures have collapsed.

Drowned. Buried by sand. Decimated by plague. Plunged off a cliff. This is the extraordinary tale of Britain's eerie and remarkable ghost towns and villages; shadowlands that once hummed with life.

Matthew Green, a British historian and broadcaster, tells the astonishing tales of the rise and demise of these places, animating the people who lived, worked, dreamed, and died there. Traveling across Britain to explore their haunting and often-beautiful remains, Green transports the listener to these lost towns and cities as they teeter on the brink of oblivion, vividly capturing the sounds of the sea clawing away row upon row of houses, the taste of medieval wine, or the sights of puffin hunting on the tallest cliffs in the country. We experience them in their prime, look on at their destruction, and revisit their lingering remains as they are mourned by evictees and reimagined by artists, writers, and mavericks.

A stunning and original excavation of Britain's untold history, Shadowlands gives us a truer sense of the progress and ravages of time, in a moment when many of our own settlements are threatened as never before.

The current school system churns out millions of illiterates and mental zombies—but here's how we're going to fix it, starting today.

Coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic, parents across the nation grapple with a new and horrifying understanding of just how bad our educational system has become. It all adds up to a system that seems hopelessly, terribly, and irrevocably broken. But as an educator and author, Andrew Bernstein reminds us that American education in the nineteenth through early-twentieth century was superb. This nation once knew how to turn out the brightest, most resourceful and independent-thinking people the world had ever seen. We can do it again.
