Sinopse

Chronicled Plagues explores the profound impact of plagues on human history, focusing on how religious interpretations and cultural narratives have shaped our understanding of these devastating events. Examining major historical outbreaks like the Black Death and the Spanish Flu, the book analyzes how societies have used religion to explain and cope with widespread disease, divine judgment, and mortality. Intriguingly, these religious interpretations, while often stemming from fear, have also fostered cultural resilience and communal support.

The book uniquely emphasizes the intersection of history and religion to reveal humanity's response to plagues. It begins by establishing a historical context for understanding major plague outbreaks and early epidemiological theories. It then progresses to examining religious interpretations across traditions, focusing on theological responses and ritual practices. Finally, it analyzes the impact of plagues on myths, literature, and art, tracing their influence on themes of morality and social order.

This approach provides a comprehensive view of how plagues have shaped cultural expression, offering valuable insights into how we construct meaning in the face of suffering.

“That’s right…send another man money, then thank him for the opportunity. It feels good, doesn’t it? It feels natural.”
My life is spiraling out of control. I sent money to a guy on social media as an experiment, but it triggered something in my brain.
Each night after work, I sit in the dark while he “drains” me. My eyes glaze over as he siphons away the money I’ve worked so hard to save. Each time I hit send, I feel his hooks digging deeper into my mind.
We’ve agreed to meet in person. I’m scared—I’m worried he’ll bond me to him, pulling me into a universe I’ll never be able to escape.
But that’s exactly what I want. I need to commit to an alpha male.

The name Deleuze is associated with strange concepts (desiring machines, ritornello, war machine or lines of flight). However, these impressive notions can be explained simply, once we have the intuition that organizes his work. This work gives us access to an understanding of the thread that ties Deleuze's thought together, particularly through literary characters such as Bartleby, Lancelot and the Princess of Cleves. Deleuze thus appears as non-dogmatic, himself open to variation and to the invention of a multiplicity of possible meanings of life.

John Wesley Powell was a pioneer American explorer, ethnologist, and geologist in the 19th Century. In 1869 he set out to explore the Colorado and the Grand Canyon. He gathered nine men, four boats and food for ten months and set out from Green River, Wyoming, on May 24. Passing through dangerous rapids, the group passed down the Green River to its confluence with the Colorado River (then also known as the Grand River upriver from the junction), near present-day Moab, Utah. The expedition's route traveled through the Utah canyons of the Colorado River, which Powell described in his published diary as having …wonderful features—carved walls, royal arches, glens, alcove gulches, mounds and monuments. From which of these features shall we select a name? We decide to call it Glen Canyon. (Ironically, now almost completely submerged by Lake Powell, behind the Glen Canyon Dam.)One man (Goodman) quit after the first month and another three (Dunn and the Howland brothers) left at Separation Rapid in the third, only two days before the group reached the mouth of the Virgin River on August 30 after traversing almost 1,500 km. The three who left the group late in the trip were later killed—probably by Indians.Powell retraced the route in 1871-1872 with another expedition, producing photographs, an accurate map, and various papers, including ethnographic reports of the area's Native Americans and a monograph on their languages. --adapted from Wikipedia
