Summary

This “fast-moving” southern American dystopian novel is “full of twists and turns” and “perhaps an insightful vision of the second Texas republic” (W. Michael Gear, New York Times–bestselling author of Dissolution).

In this near-future, post-apocalyptic novel, retired lawyer-turned-professor Willoughby Burns finds himself trying to survive against hunger and deadly threats in southern Louisiana. The Dixie Apocalypse takes place in an America ravaged by natural disasters, lack of petroleum, plagues, and terrorism. What is left of the United States is controlled by martial law. Life itself becomes primitive and favors those who can grow their own food or handle firearms. Will befriends US General Merski stationed in Baton Rouge, LA, and founds a farming community of fifty farms on the eastern bank of the Mississippi river due south of downtown Baton Rouge. General Merski enlists Will as a civilian commissary officer, in charge of carrying out errands for his troops without arousing suspicion. When the general sends Will down to Texas on to bring back supplies for his garrison, Will’s survivals skills are put to the ultimate test.

This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice.
This is a gripping tale of a man adrift in a shattered reality, his identity erased and his purpose redefined by a world where death has taken an indefinite leave of absence. Waking in a city of the living dead, he discovers a terrifying power within himself – the ability to bring an end to the unending torment. This gift, however, thrusts him into a desperate struggle against opposing forces: the sterile, fanatical cult of the Choir, who seek to impose a universal, emotionless stillness, and the desperate, scarred survivors who cling to the last vestiges of life and memory.
As he navigates the grotesque, biological landscape of this broken world, piecing together fragments of its catastrophic past, he finds himself at the nexus of a conflict where life itself is the disease and death is the only cure. With the fate of a billion souls resting on his scarred hands, he must make an impossible choice, a final, terrible surgery to excise the source of a thousand years of suffering, or to become the very stillness he had sworn to defy. It is a journey into the heart of a machine that murdered death, and the story of the surgeon who must now bring about its final, and most merciful, demise.

My whole life is one tangled lie. A horrible deception. All my past choices steered by the woman who hunts me without pause.
She’s powerful, vicious, and cruel, feared by the entire supernatural community. She’s also an immortal. Yeah, she can’t be killed—supposedly. Nothing like an insurmountable challenge, right?
I’ve trained for years to defeat any opponent, and this time, I have my mate Bruno, my sister, my pack, and a pair of strange mages at my side, ready to go down fighting with me.
My enemy might be invincible, but that won’t stop us from doing everything we can to take her down. Better to live in a world without her in it than to keep going when she’s controlled everything I’ve ever done. Either way, I’ll secure my freedom.
With nothing to lose, and everything to gain, I will find the way to kill her before she ends me. With magic, the impossible is never quite what it seems.

When a ransom note shows up at Evie's backdoor, she must come clean about her aunt's stolen ashes. She'll also need to decide if she's willing to meet the ransom demands and give up her aunt's spell book, or if she'll search for the culprit herself.

Before she can get a grip on that, Evie discovers a secret Birdie's been hiding in the dusty upstairs attic, and things take a turn for the worse. She believes Birdie should handle the mess herself, but if police learn Birdie's secret, they could both be in big trouble.
