More Than a Doll - How Creating...

    Jodi Bondi Norgaard

Can gender stereotypes in childhood be more destructive than our culture perceives and stand in the way of gender equality?

When Jodi Bondi Norgaard, an experienced entrepreneur, attempted to shake-up the toy industry with a sports doll that appeals to today's more athletic, adventurous girls, she came to realize the roadblocks to success weren't only reluctant toy buyers, but a patriarchal culture that perpetuates gender roles and sexism. More Than a Doll is about her mission to break gender stereotypes and challenge the status quo.

Through illuminating testimonials, data, research, interviews, and cultural observations, listeners will come away with clear examples of the dangers of early gender stereotyping and how we continue to fail to see the harm.

    After all: "It's just a toy." "It's just a t-shirt." "It's just a show."

Bondi Norgaard is sounding the siren that gender inequality doesn't begin in our teens, it begins the moment a child can hold a toy or book or watch a screen. The programing starts early, and the impact is lifelong.

Seven Sermons to the Dead -...

    Carl Gustav Jung

In late 1913, Carl Jung set out on an exploration of his psyche, a quest he called his "confrontation with the unconscious". In doing so, he would enter an imaginative state of consciousness and experience visions, a process that continued with varying intensity for the next ten years. He recorded his visions in six black-covered journals that he referred to as the “Black Books”, which provided a chronological record of his visions and dialogues with his soul. Along the way he used this material to begin drafting the manuscript of his legendary Red Book, a red leather-bound illustrated volume that was the formal document of this journey and which he kept private during his lifetime. He maintained that the visions recorded in the Red Book represented the nucleus of all his later work. The “Seven Sermons to the Dead”, or Septem Sermones ad Mortuos, is the only portion of the Red Book manuscript that Jung shared during his lifetime. He had the Septem Sermones privately printed as a small book in 1916 and occasionally gave copies to friends and students; it was never published and was only available as a gift from Jung himself. Jung’s heirs denied access to the Red Book after his death in 1961 until 2009, when it finally published, and it was discovered that the Septem Sermones was the closing section of the book. This context, combined with the tone and content, led one Jungian scholar to consider them as the "summary revelation of the Redbook". The Sermones ad Mortuos was included as an appendix to Jung's autobiographical memoir Memories, Dreams, Reflections when it was published in 1962.

From acclaimed psychoanalyst Adam Phillips, a meditation on what we must give up to feel more alive.

To give up or not to give up?

The question can feel inescapable but the answer is never simple.

Giving up our supposed vices is one thing; giving up on life itself is quite another. One form of self-sacrifice feels positive, something to admire and aspire to, while the other is profoundly unsettling, if not actively undesirable.

There are always, it turns out, both good and bad sacrifices, but it is not always clear beforehand which is which. We give something up because we believe we can no longer go on as we are. In this sense, giving up is a critical moment―an attempt to make a different future.

In On Giving Up, the acclaimed psychoanalyst Adam Phillips illuminates both the gaps and the connections between the many ways of giving up and helps us to address the central question: What must we give up in order to feel more alive?

In various aspects of life, we are all forced to deal with the common obstacle of having to deal with difficult individuals. For instance, difficult coworkers or bosses at work might contribute to an unfavorable work environment, reduce productivity, and even impact happiness at work. Personal connections can be strained, stressful, and filled with conflict when difficult friends or family members are involved. It is possible to improve the quality of our lives as well as the lives of those who are close to us by becoming more skilled at navigating difficult social encounters.
One of the most crucial skills for one's own personal growth and development is the capacity to deal with difficult people. In order for us to learn how to deal with difficult people, we need to develop abilities such as active listening, empathy, assertiveness, and the ability to resolve conflicts. These abilities not only make it easier for us to deal with difficult people, but they also make it possible for us to become better communicators as well as more efficient leaders.
The capacity to concentrate on what the other person is saying without interrupting or becoming distracted is an essential component of active listening. This ability allows us to understand the perspective and feelings of the other person, which is critical for developing empathy and trust for one another.
