Sinopsis

In "Life, Letters, and Epicurean Philosophy of Ninon de L'Enclos," the author vividly chronicles the life and thoughts of one of the most fascinating figures of 17th-century France. This compilation of personal correspondence and philosophical reflections showcases Ninon de L'Enclos not merely as a prominent salonnière but as a profound thinker engaged with the tenets of Epicureanism. Through her eloquent prose and keen insights, the work blends elements of autobiography with philosophical discourse, inviting readers to explore her nuanced views on love, desire, and the pursuit of happiness in a world rife with constraints. Ninon de L'Enclos, renowned for her wit and intellect, was a woman who navigated the complexities of male-dominated society with exceptional grace. An advocate for the rights of women and a venerated figure among literary giants, Ninon's own experiences of love and personal philosophy deeply informed her writings. Her vibrant salons attracted an elite intellectual circle, and her defiance of societal norms made her a towering figure in the French Enlightenment, leading her to articulate a philosophy of life that emphasizes pleasure, reason, and emotional freedom. This book is not only a testament to Ninon's extraordinary life but serves as an invitation to delve into the philosophical undercurrents that shaped her worldview. Readers interested in the intersection of gender, philosophy, and literature will find this work illuminating, as it challenges conventional narratives and inspires a deeper understanding of human desires and the essence of a fulfilled life.

What makes a person hold steadfast in their Faith amid profound trials? Faith Against Evil, Bonhoeffer's Stand in The Shadow of The Third Reich, delves into this compelling question by examining the life and theology of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a pastor and theologian whose unwavering convictions led him to resist Nazi tyranny at great personal cost.
While Bonhoeffer's story of resistance is extraordinary, this study goes beyond mere biography. It explores the theological framework that fortified his resolve, asking whether specific beliefs or contextual factors provided the strength to endure when Faith was put to the ultimate test. By integrating Bonhoeffer's theological writings with the realities of his activism and suffering, this work illuminates how theology can serve as a source of endurance.
This study is not simply an addition to the Bonhoeffer scholarship. Its purpose reaches further, offering insights into systematic theology and contributing to a broader understanding of perseverance in Faith.
Faith Against Evil, Bonhoeffer's Stand in The Shadow of The Third Reich, invites readers to reflect on the enduring power of Faith under pressure. It provides a foundation for future theological explorations into what sustains believers in the face of adversity. It is a resource for theologians, historians, and anyone seeking to understand the profound interplay between belief and resilience.

Pop culture does more than entertain us. At its best, it is a mirror—maybe sometimes a distorted fun house mirror—reflecting back to us beauty, absurdity, and profound truth of what it means to be human. These musicians, actors, writers, and producers often sit in the prophet's chair and offer us modern parables with deeper meanings waiting for those with ears to hear. When we watch and listen through a spiritual lens, their stories challenge our beliefs, help us understand our faith, and encourage us to find ways to change how we treat others and the world we share. Are You Still Watching?: Using Pop Culture to Tune In, Find God and Get Renewed for Another Season highlights different entertainment vehicles like television shows, movies, music, and podcasts that showcase the best in humanity or demonstrate ways we can grow in our faith.

Debating Gender - A Study of...

This work is an in-depth examination of medieval and contemporary discussions of gender in Islam, focusing in particular on views of women.
Ms. Harhash wisely introduces the discussion by clarifying the legal status of women in medieval Islam, which provides a useful framework for her discussion.
While her sympathy clearly lies with Averroes, I was particularly impressed by the chapter on al Ghazali, which traces a nuanced picture of al Ghazali's approach to women, highlighting striking differences in his various works and connecting his (to the modern ear) unpalatable claims about women- to his embracement of Sufism.
While Ms. Harhash is attracted to the "progressive" view of Averroes, she offers a lucid analysis of his core egalitarian statements in the commentary on the Republic without omitting to point out that his philosophical position is in some tension with the more traditional position in forming his legal decisions.
Ibn Taymiyyah is probably the biggest villain in Ms. Harhash's narrative and is portrayed as a kind of antipode to Averroes.
With respect to modern discussion, she focuses on Nawal El Saadawi and Fatima Mernissi, where she situates the modern discussion vis a vis its medieval counterpart and highlights differences and commonalities.
Ms. Harhash does a good job showing how the critique of the oppression of women in modern days leads to the same question that she had already addressed in Averroes, namely whether a critique of unjust structures in contemporary Islamic societies can be separated from a critique of Islam itself.
Overall, the thesis is a remarkable achievement. Ms. Harhash reconstructs the medieval and modern discussion with intellectual confidence and independence and brings out similarities and differences that are genuinely illuminating.

An artistic rendering of a key campaign in the American Revolution along with historical narrative brings this first United States victory to life.   The Battles of Saratoga are cited as the turning point in the Revolutionary War. Beginning when the armies prepared to face off in June 1777 through the surrender of the British Army in October, the battles of the Northern Campaign were significant to the outcome of the War and the fight for independence. As a result of the Saratoga battles, the patriots gained confidence, the French entered the war, and the British plan to win the war quickly was put to an end. Master historical painter Don Troiani and historian Eric Schnitzer combine their talents in this new book on Saratoga, the Revolutionary War campaign. This magnificently illustrated history features many new artworks, previously unpublished eyewitness accounts, photographs of important artifacts, and a solid, detailed historical narrative including background on the campaigns leading up to Saratoga.
