Summary

In our 89th issue, Michael Bracken pulls double duty to bring a pair of original mysteires to readers: great tales by Steve Liskow and Welsh-Huggins. Plus we have a crime novel by Johnston McCulley (who also created Zorro—but he tried his hand at a bunch of other heroes and antiheroes, among them The Scarlet Scourge, The Avenging Twins, and a ton of others). There’s also a novel by Western author B.M. Bower. Plus a solve-it-yourself mystery by Hal Charles.

On the science fiction & fantasy side, we have classic tales by Randall Garrett and Murray Leinster, two favorites. Robert E. Howard (much on my mind since returning from our trip to Robert E. Howard Days in Cross Plains, Texas) has a Solomon Kane adventure. And last (but far from least) we begin the serialization of Darrell Schweitzer’s amazing Sekenre: The Book of the Sorcerer, a series of linked short stories that come together to form a novel…though each tale also manages to stand on its own. The first 3 stories are in this issue.  Here’s this issue’s complete lineup:

Mysteries / Suspense / Adventure:

“Nose for News,” by Steve Liskow [Michael Bracken Presents short story]“The Case of the Burgled Bushels,” by Hal Charles [Solve-It-Yourself Mystery]“Supply Chains,” by Andrew Welsh-Huggins [Michael Bracken Presents short story]The Voice at Johnnywater, by B.M. Bower [novel]The Scarlet Scourge, by Johnston McCulley [novel]

Science Fiction & Fantasy:

“Needler,” by Randall Garrett [novella]“Rattle of Bones,” by Robert E. Howard [short story]“Ribbon in the Sky,” by Murray Leinster [novella]Sekenre: The Book of the Sorcerer, by Darrell Schwetizer [serial book, part 1 of 4]

This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice. Missing on the Menu at the Tattletale Café
In the sunny, tropical seaside town of Sandpiper Cove, the Tattle-Tale Café is more than just a coffee shop—it’s the center of the community. With its breezy patio overlooking the ocean, the scent of Leigh-Ann Garrett’s freshly brewed coffee wafting through the air, and a constant hum of chatter from the regulars, it’s where locals gather to catch up on gossip and lend a hand when someone’s in trouble.
Trouble arrives in the form of Katie Fox, whose perfect life is upended when her husband, Keith, vanishes without a trace. From the outside, Katie and Keith seemed like the ideal couple, but as whispers spread through Sandpiper Cove, it becomes clear that not everything was as picture-perfect as it seemed. Why did Keith leave without a word? And why does Katie seem to be hiding something?
Leigh-Ann, the café’s sharp-eyed owner, can’t resist a good mystery—especially when it threatens the harmony of her beloved town. With the help of her favorite regulars, the quick-witted Nora and ever-curious Liz, Leigh-Ann dives into the case. But solving the mystery of Keith’s disappearance isn’t easy. From the sandy beaches to the shady mangroves, the trio uncovers secrets that could devastate not just the Fox family, but the entire community.
Balancing café life, nosy neighbors, and a mystery that grows more tangled by the day, Leigh-Ann and her friends must piece together the truth before Sandpiper Cove’s picture-perfect charm is shattered for good.
So grab a seat at the Tattle-Tale Café, feel the sea breeze on your face, and enjoy a cup of coffee with a side of mystery—because in this tropical paradise, the gossip is hot, and the secrets are even hotter!

“Today’s foremost practitioner of the culinary whodunit.”—Entertainment Weekly
“In the genre of culinary mystery writers, Davidson is a Julia Child among Betty Crockers, and there is no question that Double Shot is her best book.”—Denver Post
New York Times bestseller Diane Mott Davidson is the darling of cozy mystery readers and dedicated foodies the world over. Davidson is really cooking with Double Shot, another tantalizing puzzle featuring her beloved protagonist, accomplished caterer and sleuth Goldy Schulz. Whipping up a rich soufflé of murder and mischief, Davidson has Goldy in a stew once again, when the reemergence of her psychopathic ex-husband and a murder that follows soon after brings chaos into her world. And, as always, many delicious recipes from Goldy’s kitchen are featured as well.
