Summary

After a decade trying to accept that London is home, a devastating bereavement pushes 29 year old May to return to the rural Vermont town she fled so long ago. Ignoring her sister's strong misgivings, she immerses herself in creating a healing garden, bringing people together with the food she loves to cook, and renovating a dilapidated farmhouse until she starts to find a sense of peace and purpose. But as spring turns to sultry summer and she is thrown increasingly together with Harley, the man she loved and left ten years before, May is torn. Will she take a risk and follow her heart, or go back to London where her ever loyal sister is longing for her return?

Mish Cromer's latest novel of love and friendship and the healing power of the natural environment explores the impact of family, trauma and loss, and the powerful need we all have to find the place where we belong.

Praise for Mish Cromer's debut novel: Alabama Chrome

You'll come for the wonderful characters — gruff Cassidy with a dark past, wise Lark, Belle and her beauty parlour, Evangeline the mechanic, Brooke Adler the hard-nosed reality TV presenter... then you'll be swept away by the fantastic sense of place. Set in small-town Kentucky and focusing on the bar which acts as the town's front porch where stories are told and secrets are ultimately revealed, Alabama Chrome is a beautifully written page-turner, told in a voice that will stay with you — along with the book's big heart. — Alison Chandler

You begin to understand, reading this story, how important it is to allow yourself to be understood, — Joanne Merrison

A compassionate and skilful tale of a soulful young man's struggle, vividly intertwined with the characters of a remote US town who welcomed him, and their reaction to the arrival of a controversial reality TV presenter. A gripping read. — Isabella

In a land destabilized by unsafe air, wildfires, floods, viruses, supply shortages, and homegrown terror, Cass is raising three small children by herself in the city. Her husband, Nathaniel, has gone all too willingly to serve as a medic in an overseas war. His absence, and Cass's isolation, has brought her into an exhausted but harmonious rhythm with the children; while it's a frightening time, there is also a surprising, quiet tenderness in living on the edge of societal collapse.

When things start to feel more dangerous in the city, Cass evacuates with the children to her mother-in-law's house deep in the countryside. Initially, it's a place of safety, but her mother-in-law's erratic behavior and increasing grip over the children worries Cass, and so they flee again to a commune on the coast. It's an idyllic place, but Cass comes to suspect this seemingly harmonious community has a dark underbelly.

Briefly Very Beautiful is a magnetic novel about love and resilience. Against a wider backdrop of a world imploding, it is an exploration of hope and fear, beauty and joy, as well as seismic betrayal. Roz Dineen's lush prose combines with epic and precise world-building to create a society that feels at once unrecognizable but deeply, chillingly familiar. The result is a compelling portrait of what it is to parent through apocalypse.

    Bren:

I don’t trust people, and for good reason. My parents kicked me out the second I turned eighteen, and my friends from high school or college all lost touch. No matter how close we get, how much they claim they love me, they always abandon me. The only person I can rely on is me, which is why I’ve built my own business from the ground up making bookish merch and accessories. So far, I’m hitting or exceeding all my goals and that’s all I need.

    Honey:

If someone asked my family to describe me, one of the first words that would come up is “reliable.” That’s me, Honey Holloway, the girl who will get it done with a smile on her face. It’s easy to grin and pretend I’m fine with my parents being unconcerned with things like taxes and invoices and the “boring” parts of running our family apiary and farm. I too would like nothing more than to hang out with the bees all day, but someone has to keep this place together and make sure my siblings have a future.

    Bren:

There is one person that I talk to though, and that’s Melliferal. We met online over a year ago and clicked right away over our shared love of books and fanfiction. I’m reluctant to share too much about myself, but she seems fine with that. Most of my ire is reserved for Honey Holloway, specifically. There’s just something about her that drives me to distraction. I’ve just never met someone who looked so much like they ate sunshine and rainbows for breakfast every morning. It’s bizarre and intriguing and irritating and arousing.

    Honey:

When I finally have a moment to myself, I talk to my online friend Bibliofile. She’s the only person who I feel like I can be honest with. Up to a point, though, because we don’t discuss any personal details. Even without knowing her real name, I’ve developed a raging crush on an internet stranger, and that’s on top of my IRL (hopeless) crush on Bren Hendrix. At least I know Bibliofile likes me, though. Bren so obviously doesn’t, but I’m not going to let that stop me. I’ve never seen someone who needs a friend more than Bren. She’s going to be mine, even if I have to bribe her with jars of hot honey that I made myself.
