Sinopsis

Can there ever be a clear-cut, unambiguous moment when life is so unbearable that helping someone to die is not only right, but an act of loving kindness?

‘The Ladder’ begins on a remote Scottish island where Gary, a recent widower, is living under an assumed name. Wracked with doubts and fears, and a grief that often overwhelms him, he decides to design a lasting tribute to his lost wife, a celebration of her life and her love of colour. But will the memorial he creates arouse suspicions amongst the islanders and make them ask questions Gary would rather not answer?

Michael Waterhouse’s first novel, ‘Prodigal’, was recommended in ‘The Times’ by Joan Bakewell as ‘a first novel of enormous power. Inspirational.’

Enter the bazaar of the bizarre where fate and fortunes are for sale in this high-stakes magical adventure across a London not quite like our own, perfect for fans of Neverwhere and The Night Circus.

Below Covent Garden lies the Untermarkt, where anything and everything has a price: a lover’s first blush, a month of honesty, a wisp of fortune. As a child, Deri was sold to one of the Market’s most powerful merchants. Now, after years of watchful servitude, Deri finally spots a chance to buy not only his freedom but also his place amongst the Market’s elite when he stumbles into the path of a runaway princess desperate to sell her royal destiny.

But news of the missing princess and her wayward destiny spreads. Royal enforcers and Master Merchants alike are after it. Outmanoeuvring them all would all be hard enough had Deri not just also met the love of his life, a young man called Owain, whose employers are using the Market for their own nefarious schemes.

Deri soon finds that the price of selling the royal destiny, making a name for himself, and saving the man he loves is dear. The cost of it all might just change the destiny of London forever.

Winner of India’s highest honor the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award for the year 2018 Postbox no. 203 Naalasopara by noted writer Chitra Mudgal is a heart wrenching tale that gazes into the darkness of our hearts; a physical and social space of harrowing and horrendous suffering; a source of untold agonies and atrocities.
It is a story of a trangender boy Vinod and his struggle to live a life of dignity in a society which is preconditioned to treating transgenders with contempt. But Vinod is every marginalised human being who wants to carve a space for himself, his struggle is every man's struggle, every women's struggle, every child who is denied his being, in short he is every one of us struggling against the dehumanising state of affairs that from the very outset rejects you as an equal.
Politicians who wants to exploit you, social activist and NGO's who want to use you for their own nefarious end, the novel cuts through all this and takes your into the heart of darkness.
This novel created a storm when it was first published in 2016.
