Sinossi

'Popcorn Trade Routes' presents a fascinating journey through the 6,500-year history of one of the world's most beloved snack foods, weaving together agricultural science, global commerce, and cultural anthropology.Beginning with the discovery of ancient popcorn kernels in Peru's Moche civilization, this comprehensive work explores how a specialized corn variety evolved from a local Native American crop into a global phenomenon that influenced societies across continents. The book uniquely combines three interconnected narratives: the biological evolution of popping corn, the development of international trade routes that facilitated its spread, and the diverse cultural practices that emerged around its consumption.Through careful analysis of archaeological findings, agricultural records, and trade documents, readers discover how specific genetic characteristics and environmental conditions contributed to the development of different popping corn strains, while maritime trade records reveal its journey from the Americas to Europe, Asia, and Africa. The narrative progresses from scientific foundations through historical distribution patterns to cultural impact, examining how different societies incorporated popcorn into their traditions – from religious ceremonies in pre-Columbian civilizations to its role in American temperance movements.Drawing from Native American oral histories, European trade documents, and agricultural records, the book presents a meticulously researched yet accessible account that challenges common assumptions about popcorn's distribution patterns while providing new evidence for early trans-oceanic trade routes.

“The Broken Path: Native Tribes and the Tragedy of the Trail of Tears” delves into one of the darkest chapters in American history, documenting the harrowing experiences of Southeastern Native American tribes during the forced relocations known as the Trail of Tears. This book offers a poignant exploration of the devastating consequences of U.S. government policies that sought to remove Indigenous peoples from their ancestral lands. Through the lens of selected tribes, whose fates, though varied, were marked by equal suffering, the narrative reveals the inhumane reality of manifest destiny.
This doctrine drove the relentless expansion of white settlers across the continent. Despite efforts by Native Americans to resist through legal battles and armed conflict, their struggle was tragically futile against the overwhelming forces of displacement. This powerful account underscores the enduring impact of this tragic era on the Indigenous populations of America.

A unique look at the lives of two daughters that highlights the dichotomy of lives of royal women, as both daughters and mothers of kings, who also knew both prison and power.

The names of few medieval monarchs and their queens are better known than Eleanor of Aquitaine, uniquely queen of France and queen of England, and her second husband Henry II. Although academically labeled "medieval," their era was the violent transition from the Dark Ages, when countries' borders were defined with fire and sword. If princes fought for their succession to crowns, the princesses were traded—usually by their mothers—to strangers for political power without the bloodshed. Years before what would today be marriageable age, royal girls were dispatched to countries whose speech was unknown to them and there became the property of unknown men. Eleanor's daughters Marie and Alix were abandoned in Paris when she divorced Louis VII of France. By Henry II, she bore Matilda, Aliénor, and Joanna. Joanna was imprisoned by William II of Sicily and worse treated by her brutal second husband in Toulouse. If Eleanor was libeled as a whore, Aliénor's descendants include two saints, Louis of France and Fernando of Spain. And then there were the illegitimate daughters, whose lives read like novels . . .

Machu Picchu, one of the most iconic symbols of Inca civilization, is a 15th-century fortress perched high on a mountain crest in southern Peru's Eastern Cordillera. Sitting at an altitude of 2,430 meters (7,970 feet), it is located 80 kilometers (50 miles) northwest of Cusco, within the Machupicchu District of Urubamba Province. The fortress overlooks the Sacred Valley, and the Urubamba River winds through the valley below, cutting through the Cordillera and forming a tropical mountain canyon. This stunning geographical setting has made Machu Picchu one of the most visited and revered archaeological sites in the world.
Unlike the Mayans, the Incas had no written language, and thus, no records of the site existed during its operation. The first Europeans to visit Machu Picchu did so only in the 19th century, and as a result, much of its history remained shrouded in mystery. Modern archaeologists, relying on tangible evidence such as graves and structural remains, have attributed names and proposed functions for the buildings, but much of the site’s exact purpose remains speculative.
Most contemporary archaeologists believe that Machu Picchu was built as a royal estate for the Inca emperor Pachacuti, who ruled from 1438 to 1472. Constructed in 1450, the site functioned as a private residence for the emperor and his court. Over time, Machu Picchu became the most well-known image of Inca civilization and is often referred to as the "Lost City of the Incas." However, the estate was abandoned in the early 16th century, following the Spanish conquest of the Inca Empire. Recent radiocarbon dating indicates that the site was occupied from around 1420 to 1532.
