Summary

Three favorite series highlight this issue: First, Sherlock Holmes—or rather, several Sherlock Holmeses—feature in A.L. Sirois’s “The Matter of Time” (thanks to Acquiring Editor Michael Bracken). Then burlesque queen turned private eye Velda returns in Ron Miller’s original tale, “Big Top Velda.” (You will recall several other Velda stories in recent months—and we have more upcoming!). And on the science fiction front, space opera misfit Lancelot Biggs stars in “The Downfall of Lancelot Biggs,” by Nelson Bond. Fun stuff!

More highlights: Acquiring Editor Barb Goffman has found a real winner in Debra H. Goldstein’s “Harvey and the Redhead.” (I’m a sucker for bar stories.) And our mystery novel is by Harold MacGrath.

On the science fiction front, we have dark fantasies from British master John S. Glasby (who’s in his 90s and still writing) and Frank Belknap Long, plus space opera from Edmond Hamilton and classic SF from Lester del Rey.

   Here’s the complete lineup—

Mysteries / Suspense / Adventure:

“The Matter of Time” by A.L. Sirois [Michael Bracken Presents short story, Sherlock Holmes series]

“The Case of the Lost Library” by Hal Charles [Solve-It-Yourself Mystery]

“Harvey and the Redhead” by Debra H. Goldstein [Barb Goffman Presents short story]

“Big Top Velda” by Ron Miller [short story, Velda series]

The Blue Rajah Murder, by Harold MacGrath [novel]

“The Matter of Time” by A.L. Sirois [Michael Bracken Presents short story, Sherlock Holmes series]

“A Place of Shadows” John S. Glasby [short story]

In this Victorian-era mystery novella, the Countess of Harleigh, Frances Hazelton, and her husband, George, discover that a French seaside resort is a fetching backdrop for business, pleasure … and murder.

Frances and George arrive in Deauville by the sea to enjoy a long-awaited honeymoon. It’s also an opportunity for George to inspect a villa inherited by his ward and arrange for its sale. To the Hazeltons’ surprise, they find it inhabited by wealthy revelers playing an illegal game of Hazard—forbidden fun, hosted by Albert Roth, a charismatic professional gambler who has a lease and no desire to vacate.

The discovery doesn’t sit well with Frances and George. Especially since Albert also fixes horse races and polo matches and is said to pay off authorities who turn a blind eye to his criminal endeavors. But not anymore. The Hazeltons plan to break up the party. Yet the game abruptly changes when a popular British polo player who claims to have lost a fortune to Albert is found murdered in the villa’s salon.

Now Frances and George have to do more than prove ownership of the valuable Normandy coast property. They have to find a killer. They’re sure all roads lead to Albert. But in a world of bribery, loansharking, corruption, and high society risks, nothing is what it seems. And for the Hazeltons, the stakes are getting higher …

In a remote valley bound by prayer and fear, two boys are chosen to take part in The Drawing—a sacred ritual meant to cleanse sin from their village.
But when mercy defies doctrine, and friendship challenges faith, the fire meant to purify consumes everything instead.
Now, as The Den burns and the forest awakens, Eli and Caleb must confront what remains: the truth that holiness can rot, and that salvation may belong not to God, but to the earth itself.
Children of the Den is a gothic folk-horror tale of devotion, betrayal, and the quiet vengeance of nature—where the forest remembers what men forget.

My name is Phillipa Hilda Schultz, but everybody calls me Pippi (It’s pronounced pee-pee. Yeah, I know). I run a boarding house for people in the early winter of their lives. You know what I mean… People whose leaves are thinning, and whose lawns are slightly frosty in the early mornings.
I inherited the business from my grams and had no experience running a boarding house when I stepped in. There’s no question I’ve had my hands full. Fractious boarders, broken appliances, leaky roofs, and a very distracting next-door neighbor who makes my engine rev. (Oops…did I say that last thing out loud?) The best thing I can do for myself is to stay away from Jack Walters. He has a tendency to cloud my thoughts and turn me into a babbling idiot. Forget I mentioned him. I mean, the real problem is the dead body my plucky little blonde dachshund, Iris, found in the flower beds.
No amount of training would have prepared me for that. Also, did I mention that the sexy next-door neighbor used to be a cop before starting his own security company?
Yeah, under the circumstances, staying away from him is going to be a challenge.
In fact, it might be nigh on impossible.
    Oh darn.
This is a five-part serialized romantic mystery novel. I hope you enjoy this fun serialization!
    Part One, November
    Part Two, December
    Part Three, January
    Part Four, February
