Summary

"A dragon darkens our dells. A witch haunts our woods. Bandits roam our moors" . . . King Stromgard swept on. "In the tradition of so many monarchs, I offer my daughter's hand in marriage and half my kingdom to the prince who can rid us of these evils, restoring peace and prosperity to our realm."And so the contest in the Kingdom of Greeve begins. But Princess Margaret is not your traditional princess. Meg firmly objects to her parents' giving her away, and she certainly has no intention of remaining in the tower where she is sequestered. Instead, she sets out to win the contest herself by enlisting the help of her good friend, her loyal maid, an eager guardsman, a young wizard, and a tenacious witch. Does Meg find her distinct place in the kingdom, or is she doomed to fulfill her royal duties?Kate Coombs weaves a magical tale full of pesky princes, enchanted frogs, a beady-eyed scarf, and invisibility juice – a tale of wonder, but a story familiar to all who struggle to find their own place in the world. The Runaway Princess is a 2007 Bank Street - Best Children's Book of the Year.

The Animorphs and Ax know they can't let the Visser find the ship. So, after they acquire orca morphs it's a battle between the SeaBlade and six killer whales. But after damaging the SeaBlade, the kids and Visser Three make a startling discovery: an underwater civilization, a sort of real-life Atlantis populated by mutated humans (gills and lungs) who call themselves Nartecs and live in huge underwater caverns filled with air. The Nartecs seize sunken vessels from the oceans of the world, adapt the ships' technology, and mummify the crews. So now, the Animorphs and Ax need to survive the encounter with the Nartec and still completely destroy the SeaBlade (whose technology would allow the Nartec to crate havoc in the world's oceans). A single Arn, Quafijinivon, the last member of the race that created the Hork-Bajir has survived. He has seen his entire people wiped out. He has seen the Hork-Bajir enslaved. Now, after a lifetime of planning and plotting, he wants to get his revenge on the Yeerks. And he wants to atone for the problems the Arn have caused. He is old and weak. But he has something the Yeerks have reason to fear: the Ixcila, the mind pattern and persona of Aldrea-Iskillion-Falan. Prince Seerow's daughter and one of the main characters of The Hork-Bajir Chronicles. Dak Hamee's Ixcila did not survive. Aldrea's Ixcila is a powerful thing for the Arn to have. Because he's also learned that while Aldrea and Dak were alive they'd managed to steal and hide an entire transport of Yeerk weaponry. And now Quafijinivon wants the free Hork-Bajir on Earth to have the weapons to fight against the Yeerks. But he has to find the weapons first. And only Aldrea would know where they are hidden. The free Hork-Bajir notify the Animorphs of this Arn's arrival on Earth. When they meet, Quafijinivon feels that Cassie is the best candidate for Aldrea's Ixcila. Now, Cassie has within her own mind the mind of Aldrea. She, the other kids, the Arn, and Toby (the young Seer of the free Hork-Bajir colony), must travel to the Hork-Bajir home world, locate the weapons cache, and help launch a new Hork-Bajir liberation movement. One problem: The Aldrea persona must voluntarily surrender its hold on the host mind or decide to push the host aside. Did Aldrea's Ixcila choose Cassie because it sensed she was weak? Or was Aldrea drawn to the truly strong memeber of the Animorphs?

A deacon once approached Reverend William J. Barber II in his church study, asking for help with a young woman’s $50 light bill. Deacons, like this retired Black man in North Carolina, have a long tradition of serving the vulnerable. Barber agreed to help but realized the deacon couldn’t see the deeper issue: the woman worked two jobs and still struggled. This blindness to poverty isn’t a personal failure but a result of societal myths.
Barber, inspired by biblical prophets, believes in calling attention to the unseen poor. He has met poor people across America who share their stories, asking not for bailouts but for recognition. Nearly 40 million Americans are officially poor, but this number is misleading. The outdated Official Poverty Measure doesn’t account for today’s high cost of living.
Many Americans live paycheck to paycheck, with real wages lower than 50 years ago. Wealth inequality has grown, with the richest 1 percent owning more than the combined wealth of 80 percent of the population. Politicians avoid naming this crisis, and myths about poverty persist. Researchers have found that 140 million Americans are poor or low-income, including 66 million white people. Most of America’s poor are white.
