Beschreibung

'I straighten her little tiara every morning – I lift her chin and remind her that she is meant for greater things than playground bullies.'

'Everything shines in its own time. There is no timetable for life. Timetables are for classrooms, not for people.'
These are just some of the wisdoms shared on The Village, South Africa's beloved Facebook group for parents raising tweens, teens and young adults.
Having kids is a baffling endeavour beset with sulk, meltdowns, anxiety and disappointment – and that's just the parents! When you get that call to the principal's office? When the school acceptances don't come? When the bedroom door slams and you hear your child sobbing behind it? All awful but it's also a precious time.
The trick? To find a way to enjoy our families, love our children and believe in them and ourselves despite the daily challenges. And laugh . . .
In this book, Vanessa Raphaely and Karin Schimke have gathered together life lessons and insights from The Village members. It contains the gems and remedies from the real parenting experts – the parents – to help you raise your family in your own perfectly imperfect way.

Students learning modern foreign languages often comment that it is just too hard to learn, and remember, all of vocabulary presented to them. Yes, there is a lot of content that needs to be covered, and a lot of vocabulary that needs to be learned. But there is a way of making this process engaging and motivating. Language lessons needn't be full of grammar worksheets, endless drilling and rote learning lists of vocabulary.
Learning languages isn't always fun and games. But these aren't games; they are fun learning activities. And they can help revolutionise language teaching; enabling teachers to authoritatively impart knowledge while fostering a thirst for knowledge and love of learning in their students.
First, the Vocab Fun Learning Activities (VFLAs) learn the vocabulary in ways which will improve recognition and recall. Then, the Fun Learning Activities use this vocabulary knowledge to build sentences and paragraphs; explore and use this language while keeping the whole class engaged and actively learning. The activities are designed to encourage all students to participate and learn more through enjoyment.
Based on the author's extensive classroom experience, and underpinned by research into how students learn best, each activity comes complete with a detailed explanation and plenty of ideas for variations, differentiations and extensions. The activities come with example vocabulary lists in French, German and Spanish as a starting point, which are all available for download via a link provided in the book. However, the activities will work effectively in any language and with any vocabulary list of the teacher's choosing, and can be adapted to suit every topic, learning objective and age range.
Discover ready to use activities which will make for outstanding lessons in every class and ensure engagement, motivation, rapport, progress and attainment over time.

A personal and literary examination of hypochondria.

A free-wheeling philosophical essay, Hypochondria is expansive in its range of references, from the writings of Franz Kafka to original yet accessible readings of theorists like Lauren Berlant. Whether he is discussing Seinfeld, John Donne, or his own hypochondriac past, Rees reveals himself to be a wry and perceptive critic, exploring the causes — and the costs — of our desire for certainty. With wit and erudition, Hypochondria demonstrates both the rewards and the perils of reading (too) closely the common but typically overlooked aspects of our everyday lives.

You wont be familiar with every one of the huge array of women featured in this book, but all, familiar or not, leave unanswered questions behind them. The range is extensive, as was the research, with its insight into the lives and minds of women in different centuries, different countries, with diverse cultures and backgrounds, from the poverty stricken to royalty. Mistresses, murderers, smugglers, pirates, prostitutes, and fanatics with hearts and souls that feature every shade of black (and grey!). From Cleopatra to Ruth Ellis, from Boudicca to Bonnie Parker, from Lady Caroline Lamb to Moll Cutpurse, from Jezebel to Ava Gardner. Less familiar names include Mary Jeffries, the Victorian brothel-keeper, Belle Starr, the American gambler and horse thief, La Voisin, the seventeenth-century Queen of all Witches in France but these are random names, to illustrate the variety of the content in store for all those interested in women who defy law and order, for whatever reason. The risque, the adventurous and the outrageous, the downright nasty and the downright desperate all human (female!) life is here. From the lower strata of society to the aristocracy, class is not a common denominator. Wicked? Misunderstood? Nave? Foolish? Predatory? Manipulative? Or just out of their time? Listen and decide.

The Sumerians were the people from Sumer, the first recognized society in the historic area of southern Mesopotamia (now southern Iraq), developed throughout the 6th and 5th centuries BC throughout the Chalcolithic and early Bronze Ages. In addition to age-old Egypt, the Caral-Supe culture, the Indus Valley civilization, the Minoan civilization, and age-old China, it is also one of the world's early civilizations. Sumerian farmers who lived along the Tigris and Euphrates valleys grew a great deal of grain and other items, which allowed them to establish metropolitan towns. Before 3000 BC, there was proto-writing. The earliest files date from between 3500 and 3000 BC and are from the cities of Uruk and Jemdet Nasr.
Most historical analysts believe that Sumer was first completely occupied between c. 5500 and 4000 BC by a West Asian population who spoke the Sumerian language, a non-Semitic and non-Indo-European agglutinative language isolate (as evidenced by the names of cities, rivers, standard professions, and so on). It wasn't an inflected language, in contrast to its Semitic cousins.
Go ahead and get stared, and get to know more about the Sumerians, what they did, who they were, and why so many people know so little about them.

"The Art of Controversy" by Arthur Schopenhauer is a compelling and insightful exploration of the nature and strategies of intellectual argumentation and debate. In this thought-provoking work, Schopenhauer offers a comprehensive guide to engaging in productive and effective discussions, while also exposing the fallacies and pitfalls commonly encountered in contentious exchanges. Schopenhauer's keen intellect and analytical prowess are on full display as he dissects the art of argumentation. He explores the tactics employed by skilled debaters, uncovering the strategies they use to sway opinions and manipulate opponents. By examining these techniques, Schopenhauer equips readers with the tools necessary to navigate controversial discussions and to recognize and counter fallacious reasoning. Read in English, unabridged.
