Summary

In "Military Memoirs of Field Marshal the Duke of Wellington," Joseph Moyle Sherer crafts a compelling narrative that immerses readers in the life and military exploits of one of Britain's most revered commanders. Employing a rich, descriptive literary style, Sherer delineates Wellington's strategic brilliance during critical military campaigns, including the Peninsular War and the Battle of Waterloo. The memoirs are not merely a collection of military engagements; they serve as a profound exploration of leadership, discipline, and the complexities of wartime politics, reflecting the broader socio-political fabric of early 19th-century Europe. Joseph Moyle Sherer, a contemporary of Wellington, was not only a keen observer of military events but also shared a profound respect for the Duke's contributions to British military history. Sherer's own experiences, intertwined with his journalistic background, afforded him unique insights into Wellington's character, allowing him to present an authentic and nuanced portrayal that transcends mere military documentation. His text functions as both a historical record and a personal homage to a figure whose legacy shaped the destiny of a nation. This book is highly recommended for historians, military enthusiasts, and general readers alike who seek to understand the intricacies of leadership during one of history's most turbulent times. Sherer's eloquent prose paired with his meticulous attention to detail provides an indispensable resource for appreciating the enduring impact of the Duke of Wellington on military strategy and British history.

Augusto José Ramón Pinochet Ugarte was a Chilean military officer and politician who dominated Chilean politics as a military dictator from 1973 to 1990. His rise to power marked a pivotal and controversial chapter in the nation’s history. Initially serving as the leader of the Military Junta of Chile from 1973 to 1981, he was declared President of the Republic by the junta in 1974, consolidating his role as Chile's de facto head of state. With the approval of a new constitution in 1981, his presidency was formalized, making him the de jure leader of the country until 1990.
Pinochet’s military career set the stage for his rise to power. After steadily climbing the ranks of the Chilean Army, he achieved the position of General Chief of Staff in 1972. In an unexpected turn, President Salvador Allende, leader of the democratically elected left-wing Unidad Popular government, appointed Pinochet as Commander-in-Chief of the Chilean Army on August 23, 1973, just weeks before his eventual ouster. This appointment would prove consequential as Pinochet played a central role in the coup that toppled Allende's government on September 11, 1973. Supported by the United States, the coup ended civilian rule in Chile and marked the beginning of Pinochet’s authoritarian regime.

Thousands of miles away from where her son was deployed, a powerful premonition is devastatingly confirmed by a knock on the door from two faceless strangers bearing the news that her son had stepped on an improvised explosive device in the poppy fields of Afghanistan. He had lost both of his legs and suffered multiple other injuries, including partial amputation of all the fingers of his left hand. For forty-eight days she stood at his bedside.

Not only did he survive against all odds, but in time he began to test the limits of his new capabilities and undertook the first of, what would prove to be, many physical challenges. Just eighteen months after injury, and as part of a team of four servicemen, he rowed across the Atlantic Ocean for the first time.

Told mostly from a mother's perspective with contributions from Cayle, the genesis of the book was in the diary she kept while he was in a medically induced coma. It is the story of an extraordinarily brave man who has been through the agonies of rebuilding his life, with the encouragement of family and friends.

This was never meant to be another book about war or Afghanistan; it is a message of how love and hope can overcome adversity.

In 100 per cent of criminal trials someone, if not everyone, tells lies.
If it wasn’t for liars, there wouldn’t be trials.
When a defendant swears ‘to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth’, most judges and barristers believe their evidence will be ‘nothing like the truth’. Who can blame them? During years of exposure to a daily diet of murder and mayhem, lies and liars, they’ve heard it all before.
In Nothing Like the Truth, Nigel Lithman QC provides an entertaining and irreverent insight into life in the criminal courts as barrister, QC and Crown Court judge. Using his experience in true crime, he mixes tales of horror with humour and questions whether it is possible for defendants to get a fair trial.
Nigel Lithman QC is well known among his peers as a fearless advocate, fair-minded judge and funny man. Exasperated with the criminal justice system, he successfully led the Criminal Bar in its only strike against the government.
