Summary

Duncan McGregor is the last bachelor in his family and is desperate to find someone to call his onw, so he sees no other choice than an arranged marriage. To look for a suitor, their clan hosts the Scottish Games and women all around Scotland and England are invited to attend. Lyra Wright didn't want to go to Scotland but she is forced to go since the family she works for, the Chapmans, are invited to the event and that is their last hope to marry their daughter, Missy, and to take their name out of the mud. What no one expected was that, between all the women, Lyra, the English maid, would catch his eye. Little by little, between games and balls, they fell in love. But the women won't let him go that easy.

The Stranger - Not a Rocket Not...

A routine stop becomes an impossible encounter when a mining ship lands beside a vessel that does not answer, does not move, and does not resemble anything built by human hands. Suspicion rises fast, but leaving is not as simple as turning away, especially when silence might mean suffering. As tension grows between caution and obligation, a decision must be made that cannot be reversed once acted upon.
The Stranger unfolds in tight, human moments rather than spectacle. Fear is immediate and personal. Authority is questioned. Trust is tested not through words, but through action taken without assurance of safety or reward. Each step forward carries risk, and every pause invites regret. The story presses its characters toward a single act that will define who they are when no law, signal, or explanation is available to guide them.
Gordon R. Dickson was known for building science fiction around moral pressure points rather than technological puzzles. His work appeared in magazines such as Astounding Science Fiction and Analog, and his stories often place ordinary professionals—soldiers, pilots, workers—into moments where choice matters more than capability. The Stranger reflects that focus, narrowing the universe to two men, one decision, and whatever waits on the other side of it.

Three homicidal maniacs. Two radioactive shoes. One body in a suitcase.
When Dr David Cairney, a politics lecturer, goes missing on the way home from his retirement party, his wife asks ex-boxer and journalist Robbie Gould for help. Gould wants nothing to do with it. But he needs the money.

Meanwhile, the body of another politics lecturer, Professor Stephen Hogg, has been found, his body folded into a suitcase beside the Clydeside Expressway. While poking around the murder victim's office, Gould encounters pathologist Sarah Badar. She worked on Hogg's post mortem, only to find her report redacted, and she wants answers too.

As the pair delve deeper into the case, they unearth connections between the two academics and a rogues' gallery of oddballs and grotesques including rival gangsters from Edinburgh and Glasgow, a llama-farm owner in Kirkintilloch and an ex-KGB general with a trepanned skull and a thirst for vengeance.

Sarah and Gould find themselves immersed in a world of missing Kremlin diamonds and pre-digital espionage – all coded signals, orange peel and scraps of red thread.
