Summary

In "An Account of the Danes and Norwegians in England, Scotland, and Ireland," Jens Jacob Asmussen Worsaae meticulously chronicles the historical presence and influence of Scandinavian settlers in the British Isles. Written in a clear and engaging literary style, this seminal work combines empirical research with narrative accounts, revealing the cultural exchanges and societal impacts of the Viking Age on the regions examined. Contextually situated in the 19th century, a period keenly interested in national identities and historical heritage, Worsaae's text serves as a crucial contribution to both Nordic and British historiography. Worsaae, a distinguished Danish archaeologist and a pioneer in the field of prehistoric Scandinavia, was motivated by a deep-seated belief in the significance of material culture and historical lineage. His extensive background in archaeology fostered a profound understanding of the ways in which Scandinavian migration has shaped societal structures and traditions in England, Scotland, and Ireland. This work is significant not only for its content but also as a reflection of Worsaae's dedication to illuminating the Nordic narrative in European history. Readers interested in the complexities of cultural interchange during the Viking Age will find Worsaae's work invaluable. It combines rigorous scholarship with accessible prose, making it suitable for both academics and general readers alike. This book is not merely a historical account; it is a vibrant exploration of the threads that connect past and present in the rich tapestry of European heritage.

When Samuel Townsend died at his home in Madison County, Alabama, in November 1856, the fifty-two-year-old white planter left behind hundreds of slaves, thousands of acres of rich cotton land, and a net worth of approximately $200,000. In life, Samuel had done little to distinguish himself from other members of the South's elite slaveholding class. But he made a name for himself in death by leaving almost the entirety of his fortune to his five sons, four daughters, and two nieces: all of them his slaves.

In this deeply researched, movingly narrated portrait of the extended Townsend family, R. Isabela Morales reconstructs the migration of this mixed-race family across the American West and South over the second half of the nineteenth century. Searching for communities where they could exercise their newfound freedom and wealth to the fullest, members of the family homesteaded and attended college in Ohio and Kansas; fought for the Union Army in Mississippi; mined for silver in the Colorado Rockies; and, in the case of one son, returned to Alabama to purchase part of the old plantation where he had once been held as a slave. In Morales's telling, the Townsends' story maps a new landscape of opportunity and oppression, where the meanings of race and freedom—as well as opportunities for social and economic mobility—were dictated by highly local circumstances.

As a member of the "New Thought" movement, Henry Harrison Brown (1840 - 1918) founded the periodical "NOW". In this magazine, he first published his most famous essay "Dollars want me!" Brown presented positive affirmations which inevitably attract money and financial independence. Easy, concise, to the point: Brown states that without man, money is nothing. Therefore, money seeks man to fulfill its duty. All man needs to do is to prepare mentally - and financial freedom will be the result. Extremely interesting and highly entertaining!

Ballers of the New School is one of the first and best books to come along that effectively explains contemporary athletes and the public response to them. It asks readers to consider the role of race in the sweaty as well as the sweat-free zones of sport. It challenges the well-worn narrative of sport as America's most significant site of racial progress by scrutinizing the true role of sport in mobilizing and shaping definitions, social relations, and public life.American sport culture performs and propagates rituals, symbols, and expressions of fear and difference that sustain racism, and notions of racial supremacy and block bridges to racial progress.
The text encourages a restructuring of the power of the racial subtexts thrust into sporting arenas, upon the bodies of athletes of color, and into the mind and hearts of spectators via the racial contract. The book's impetus is for readers to emerge with more truthful narratives, more honest dialogues, better American values, better social relations, and hopefully, using this new vision of sports culture as a model, real change.

Debating Gender - A Study of...

This work is an in-depth examination of medieval and contemporary discussions of gender in Islam, focusing in particular on views of women.
Ms. Harhash wisely introduces the discussion by clarifying the legal status of women in medieval Islam, which provides a useful framework for her discussion.
While her sympathy clearly lies with Averroes, I was particularly impressed by the chapter on al Ghazali, which traces a nuanced picture of al Ghazali's approach to women, highlighting striking differences in his various works and connecting his (to the modern ear) unpalatable claims about women- to his embracement of Sufism.
While Ms. Harhash is attracted to the "progressive" view of Averroes, she offers a lucid analysis of his core egalitarian statements in the commentary on the Republic without omitting to point out that his philosophical position is in some tension with the more traditional position in forming his legal decisions.
Ibn Taymiyyah is probably the biggest villain in Ms. Harhash's narrative and is portrayed as a kind of antipode to Averroes.
With respect to modern discussion, she focuses on Nawal El Saadawi and Fatima Mernissi, where she situates the modern discussion vis a vis its medieval counterpart and highlights differences and commonalities.
Ms. Harhash does a good job showing how the critique of the oppression of women in modern days leads to the same question that she had already addressed in Averroes, namely whether a critique of unjust structures in contemporary Islamic societies can be separated from a critique of Islam itself.
Overall, the thesis is a remarkable achievement. Ms. Harhash reconstructs the medieval and modern discussion with intellectual confidence and independence and brings out similarities and differences that are genuinely illuminating.
