Sinopse

Pride and Prejudice is one of the most beloved novels in English literature, celebrated for its sparkling wit, memorable characters, and timeless exploration of love and social convention. Set in early 19th-century England, the story follows Elizabeth Bennet, a sharp-minded and independent young woman navigating issues of marriage, morality, and class.

When the wealthy and reserved Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy enters her social circle, Elizabeth's quick judgments and Darcy's pride lead to misunderstanding and conflict. As their paths continue to cross, both are forced to confront their own flaws, prejudices, and misconceptions. Through moments of humor, tension, and emotional growth, the novel reveals how self-awareness and humility can transform relationships.

With keen social observation and elegant prose, Jane Austen crafts a romantic comedy that is as insightful as it is entertaining. Pride and Prejudice remains a timeless tale of personal growth, enduring love, and the triumph of mutual respect over pride and misunderstanding.

A Room With A View by E.M. Forster is at its heart a classic love story, played out within the strict social and class structures of Edwardian England. The author explores many aspects of his contemporary society, but the story could have been written in any time, as the themes are universal. At times the prose is magically descriptive, the dialogue razor sharp. Lucy, the heroine, must find herself, as well as confront the restrictions and expectations of her upbringing in society, and her family. Narrated by Graham Stuart, this book comes alive and transports the listener totally into the scenes.

Gordon Comstock is a poor young man who works by day in a grubby London bookstore and spends his evenings shivering in a rented room, trying to write. Gordon has published a slim volume of verse and is determined to keep free of the “money world” of safe, lucrative jobs, marriage, and family responsibilities. This world, to Gordon, spells the end of art and aspidistra, the homely, indestructible house plant that stands in every middle-class British window.Gordon’s sweetheart, Rosemary, understands him: she is patient with his pride and lack of funds. But then, as it happens with all lovers, events overtake them.
Orwell’s picture of the “money world,” as Gordon sees it, is in his best satirical vein.

Among them are the timid Mrs. Wilkins and the devoutly sad Mrs. Arbuthnot, both desperate to leave behind their suffocating marriages and the gray drudgery of Hampstead. To split the cost of a medieval Italian castle for the month of April, they recruit the elderly, nostalgic Mrs. Fisher and the stunning, exhausted aristocrat Lady Caroline Dester. What begins as a desperate flight from their unfulfilled lives soon becomes a journey of profound self-discovery. “Every man desires to live long, but no man wishes to be old.”
As a survivor of a shipwreck, Lemuel Gulliver encounters some entirely absurd things – at first, he is in the land of Lilliputians, the tiny men; but later he ventures to the land of the giants. The tale continues to oscillate between the extremes as he meets immensely wise and scientifically aware people before being faced with excessive self-preoccupation and ignorance. Whatever that societal order, Gulliver consistently is a witness to the abuse of power. The satire often overemphasises the contraries in order to accentuate our individual and societal flaws and proneness to being corrupt and biased. In such a distinct way it rebukes human narrow-mindedness and accentuates our subjectivity.
The novel’s multivalence has made it a celebrated children’s bedtime read – in particular, the first book – as well as a treasury of satirical metaphors and allusions that expose human and societal flaws in general and those of the English nobility in particular. The novel is an answer to Robinson Crusoe – it mocks Defoe’s protagonist’s too-good-to-be-true human aptness and reason. While some might find Swift’s modus operandi misanthropic, others will see him as a pragmatist who exemplifies how the excesses and polarities are detrimental and yet inescapable. Silly and bizarre, thought-provoking and alarming, this work is meant to be read and re-read as equally a jolly story and a philosophical or political collage of insights.
