In the discovery of a fossilized tree stump deep off the coast of Bermuda, Angela Barry finds a potent metaphor of long-term climate change against which to measure the alarms, resentments and hopes of future possibilities expressed by her characters as they respond to Bermuda's emergence from colonial status. Modernity brings challenges to the old racial, cultural and religious hierarchies that have dominated the island. Told through a group of characters brought together in shared responsibility for Genesis, a young Black adolescent on the verge of incarceration as a juvenile offender, and by Genesis herself, Barry explores a clashing of subcultures, each with the sense that their Bermuda is the one that possesses the island's virtues. There is Nina, from the respectable Black middle-class, with her own prickly uncertainties and moral hang-ups; Lizzie, fighting for her own space in a Portuguese family railing against changing times; Tess, battling with guilt over her white privilege and her reluctance to lose its benefits; and Hugh, a young Welshman who has come to the island to find himself. Above all, in the character of Genesis, Barry creates a dynamic and winning portrayal of the energies, hopes, conscience and vulnerabilities of youth. Beyond the human world with all its divisions, there are the little-known islands of Bermuda, for whose stunning beauties and sometimes urban ugliness Barry has a vividly descriptive eye.

Got five minutes? Well good, here’s what J.R. Ripley's amazing Five Minutes is all about…Todd Jones is a hotshot realtor in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He’s got a hot girlfriend, too. The trouble is that Todd is a real bad judge of character, especially his own. Todd’s got himself tangled up worse than an old fishing line balled up in that long forgotten tackle box in the garage. Let’s enumerate. One of Todd’s biggest clients is mad because the property Todd talked him into buying is underwater—literally. A screwy surfer dude with a recreational drug habit and a millionaire gun manufacturer for a father has got some not-so-friendly dealers on his tail. Todd’s mother has shown up and wants to live with him. And she’s brought her pet pig. And, oh, yeah, there’s this little problem Todd is having with one of his best friends, Dr. Doug Freeman. Todd has been sleeping with Doug’s wife. Okay, so maybe he shouldn’t have. He’d be the first to admit that it may have been an error in judgment on his part. He is a bad judge of character, remember? And that leads us to Todd Jones’ biggest problem. Dr. Doug has found out about Todd’s philandering and is aiming a pistol at Todd’s forehead even as we speak. Todd has five minutes to live. Maybe less if his girlfriend finds out about his cheating ways.

Mark Phillips is one frustrated guy. It’s bad enough that his wife Diana has grown ever more bossy, demanding, and controlling over the years. But to have her bossing him around even in the bedroom—as in: lights out, no-frills, missionary style, and very infrequent sex—is just killing him!

And now she’s gone and joined some lunatic church whose hardline minister, Father Maurice, is as old-world, fire and brimstone as it gets. Worse, she wants Mark to join, too—claiming that he could use some improvement in the morals department, referring to Mark’s increased obsession with sex.

Well, against his better judgment, he joins the church—just to keep her off his back about it. And, as a new member, he is required to fill out a six-page questionnaire that asks all kinds of personal questions—even about his married life. So, hey, he tells the truth. In comprehensive detail, he describes Diana’s controlling, bossy, demanding ways.

    Big mistake.

At the following week’s service, Father Maurice tells the whole congregation all about it and then goes off on a rant about how the husband is supposed to be in charge and how Diana is violating the creed of their religion.

And then he shocks the hell out of them when he declares that Diana is to receive a spanking for her sins—right there…in church…in front of everyone…over the minister’s knee! And yes, Diana will be quite exposed in the process.

    Exposed, embarrassed, submissive, and dominated.

But that’s not all. Next, he invites Mark to have a turn at teaching his wife right from wrong. And it turns out to be the most titillating experience he’s ever had—by a mile. Having her over his knee before the entire congregation is a thrill beyond anything he could have ever imagined. And, as was intended, it puts him back in complete control of their relationship.

So, just imagine what happens when this newly empowered dominant male does when he gets her home!

Marrying him was supposed to be business… not pleasure.
Liam “Dex” Dexter, the world’s hottest surfer, needs American citizenship to qualify for the Olympics. Britta needs enough cash to leave her small-town life behind and finally open her dream coffee shop in LA. Their plan is simple: get married, fake the happily-ever-after, and go their separate ways once their goals are met.
    There’s just one tiny problem.
Living together — and sharing a bed — makes it impossible to ignore the sparks between them. The more time they spend pretending, the harder it is to remember that this is just a business arrangement.
But when their carefully crafted deal threatens to become something real, Britta and Dex will have to decide if their dreams are worth more than the unexpected passion pulling them together.
Britta & the Beach Boy is a swoony, slow-burn marriage-of-convenience romantic comedy with laugh-out-loud moments, hot Australian surfers, and just the right amount of heart. While it’s the first book in the Love in LA series, Britta and her family make their debut in the Love in Paradise Valley series. Each book stands alone, but trust me… you’ll want to read them all.
