Summary

This iconic work of experimental modernism “comes nearer to being the perfect revelation of a personality than any book in existence” (The New York Times).   Taking place on June 16, 1904, Ulysses follows the itinerant journeys of Leopold Bloom and Stephen Dedalus as they make their way through an ordinary day in Dublin. With stream-of-conscious narration, Joyce weaves a sprawling yet incisive portrait of his characters, the nature of desire, and Dublin itself.   First published in Paris in 1922, Joyce’s masterwork was once banned for obscenity in the United States and Britain. Hailed as a work of genius by Ezra Pound, Ernest Hemingway, and many others, Ulysses remains one of the most significant works in English literature.

Ten-year-old Sarah Crewe arrives at Miss Minchin’s London boarding school arrayed like a princess. She wears velvet, lace and silk, carries a gorgeous life-like doll, and has a French maid. Charming and imaginative, she soon becomes the envy of the other girls. When tragedy suddenly takes away Sarah’s fine clothes and privileges, her schoolmates wait to see if she will give up. But, now living in the school’s dingy attic and toiling long hours for the demanding students who were once her friends, Sarah’s generous spirit remains untouched by the hardship and cruelty.
Frances Hodgson Burnett earned a special place in children’s hearts with her wonderful books which include The Secret Garden. Since 1905, A Little Princess has captivated countless readers, and recently it has been made into a major motion picture. Now, through Leishman’s lyrical narration, Sarah and the other unforgettable characters of this delightful riches-to-rags tale speak to new generations.

A hundred and thirty years after it was first published, Sarah Orne Jewett's story of a young medical woman remains an incisive rendering of the dilemmas of gender, society, and self. Nan Prince first becomes interested in medicine as a child, as the ward of the widowed physician Dr. Leslie. In time she becomes his protégée. But when she enters medical college, she realizes that she will have to choose between marriage and her career, between the demands of her society and her obligations to her true self. Inspired by Jewett's own interests and by her father, A Country Doctor portrays a world very much in flux and Nan, ultimately, as a woman with a new world opening to her.
