Beschreibung

In "The Prodigal Father," J. Storer Clouston deftly weaves a narrative that explores themes of familial relationships, guilt, and redemption through the lens of a crumbling domestic backdrop. The story centers around a father whose return after years of absence forces his family to confront unresolved issues and buried emotions. Clouston's narrative style is marked by elegant prose, vivid characterizations, and a keen psychological insight, making the text resonate within the broader context of early 20th-century literature, which often grappled with the complexities of human relationships in an evolving social landscape. J. Storer Clouston, a British author born in 1870, was deeply influenced by his own experiences of family dynamics and societal shifts. His keen observation of the human condition and its frailty shines through in this novel, revealing an understanding of the struggles of post-Victorian society. Clouston's works often engage with themes of morality and the intricacies of personal relationships, reflecting both his personal journey and the tumultuous changes of his time. For readers who appreciate poignant explorations of family dynamics and the intricate web of emotions that bind us, "The Prodigal Father" stands as a compelling choice. Clouston's rich narrative invites a profound reflection on the nature of forgiveness and the enduring bonds of kinship, making it an essential read for those interested in character-driven literature.

The major work of Rabbi Moses Almosnino (1515-1580), “Conduct of Life,” remains to this day an essential reference in classical Judeo-Spanish literature, now finally available in English in its first translation. First published in Ladino in 1564 as, Sefer Hanhagat hahayim and in 1729 as “Regimiento de la vida”, this three-volume edition is part of the prestigious collection Veritas è terra orietur. The work aims to disseminate the timeless teachings of ethics, in the words of the author: “In all that has been said, my intention is only to make you understand how the one who follows the path of virtue and customs of practising good and pure knowledge since childhood, lives a happy and fulfilled life (Volume 1, chapter 2)” The third volume deals with justice (Volume 3, chapters 1-3) and friendship (chapters 4-8 and 13), love (chapter 9), the five intellectual virtues: understanding, science, wisdom, prudence, and art (chapter 10-11), and the learning of sciences as a path to virtue (chapter 12). This work presents itself as a pedagogical endeavor, intended to provide advice for leading a virtuous life.“Conduct of Life” draws heavily from the Nicomachean Ethics but transcends this source by situating itself at the universal intersection of several traditions: Greco-Arabic philosophy, Judeo-Christian scholasticism, classical Sephardic Judaism, and medieval Jewish thought. Thus, this work contributes to peace and intercultural understanding among peoples.

Bound by fate, yet forbidden to love
When Phillip Watson, the Earl of Arundel, awakens battered and broken in a stranger’s home, he has no memory of who he is—or who wants him dead. As he pieces together the fragments of his forgotten life, the one bright spot is in a growing affection for Miss Emma Parker.
Emma Parker is a spirited romantic with dreams of a love so powerful it rivals that of Romeo and Juliet. When her father saves a man from the brink of death, Emma finds herself drawn to the mysterious stranger with no name, no past, and a magnetic pull that ignites her very soul.
As Phillip’s memories return, so do the secrets he’s desperate to escape. Phillip’s father, the duke, entered a wager, betrothing him to another, making his newfound love for Emma forbidden—a temptation that could ruin them both.
Torn between the woman who has captured his heart and the deadly truth that someone wants him dead, Phillip must make an impossible choice: duty or desire, survival or sacrifice.
The Earl of Arundel is a closed-door Regency romance with high stakes, lots of swoon, and a story that will keep you reading from page one to the very end.

One great example of Chekhov's minimalism is found in The Beauties, a very short "story" - I use the term loosely, because it is really just two snapshots, two unrelated anecdotes in which a man describes seeing true beauty in two different women. These women are imperfect, yet enigmatically alluring.
Chekhov's genius lies in the way he manages to convey with such apparent effortlessness a profound sense of the mystery of beauty, and of the sadness of those who observe and think. The narrator of this apparently inconsequential tale fixes on exactly the right details, from a myriad of possible ones, to strike at the heart. It's a masterpiece of minimalism.

In a dark and crooked lane in an unnamed city where it never ceases to snow, a small white box falls from a coat pocket. It is made of paper strips woven tightly together; there is no apparent way to open it without destroying it. What compels a passing witness, a self-described anthrophobe not inclined to engage with other people, to pick up the box and chase after the stranger who dropped it?

The Box follows an impenetrable rectangle as it changes hands in a collapsing metropolis, causing confluences, conflicts, rifts, and disasters. Different narrators, each with a distinctive voice, give secondhand accounts of decisive moments in the box's life. From the anthrophobe to a newly hired curator of a renowned art collection, from a couple who own an antiquarian bookshop to a hotel bartender hiding from a terrible past, the storytellers repeat rumors and rely on faulty memories, grasping at something that continually escapes them. Haunting their recollections is one mysterious woman who, convinced of the box's good or evil powers, pursues it with deadly desperation.

In this mesmerizing, intricately constructed puzzle of a novel, Mandy-Suzanne Wong challenges our understanding of subjects and objects, of cause and effect. Is it only humans who have agency? What is or isn't animate? What do we value and what do we discard?
