Summary

People are drawn to the harbours and boats of Scotland whether they have a seafaring background or not. Why do boats take on different shapes as you follow the complex shorelines of islands and mainland? And why do the sails they carry appear to be so many shapes and sizes? Then there are rowing craft or power-driven vessels which can also be considered 'classics', whether they were built for work or leisure.
As he traces the iconic forms of a selection of the boats of Scotland, Ian Stephen outlines the purposes of craft, past and present, to help gain a true understanding of this vital part of our culture. Sea conditions likely to be met and coastal geography are other factors behind the designs of a wide variety of craft.
Stories go with boats. The vessels are not seen as bare artefacts without their own soul but more like living things.
'A writer uniquely attuned to the water, and to the relationships each boat shares with the places it shaped, his stories restore past sea roads and river routes to life' - David Gange, author of The Frayed Atlantic Edge

"As a major fan and promoter of Julian of Norwich, whom I call 'my favorite mystic', it is genuinely exciting to find such a faithful but freeing translation of Julian's long-lost Showings. Now they are no longer lost—for anyone!" —Fr. Richard Rohr, O.F.M., Center for Action and ContemplationIn this contemporary translation of one of the most beloved and influential mystical texts of all time, Julian of Norwich: The Showings brings the message and spirituality of this 14th-century mystic to 21st-century readers. Revelations of Divine Love, the first book published in English attributed to a woman, is also included.Julian of Norwich, a contemporary of Geoffrey Chaucer, was an English anchoress in East Anglia. At the age of 30, suffering from a severe illness and believing she was on her deathbed, Julian had a series of intense visions of Jesus, which she recorded and then expanded on later in her life. In her visions, God was not angry and wrathful. Instead, the three properties of God were presented as life, love, and light, and all of His creation was good, including his servant, man. In Julian's version, man is not to blame for his sin; sin is something that he must experience and overcome in his spiritual journey with God.Her message for today's readers is simply this:She reveals the feminine face of the Divine and reminds us to see God there. All our failings are an opportunity to learn and grow; they should be honored, but not dwelled upon.God's love has nothing to do with love and retribution and everything to do with love and compassion. In spite of all appearances, all is well. This book contains some of the most profound spiritual writing ever written and remains a perennial favorite among Christians. This book was previously published as The Showings of Julian of Norwich. This new edition includes a foreword by Richard Rohr, author of Falling Upwards.

    Insight of others thoughts -...

You know how your partner or colleague typically reacts, but with this book, you will also understand their fundamental motives. This way, you can avoid many arguments that follow the same pattern as the last time you disagreed. The same logic will help you in the future when completing a task for your boss. When dealing with customers, you will instinctively know whether they seek something innovative or reassurance about their purchase. In addition to being able to read others’ thoughts, you will also understand how people perceive you.
The book is logically structured and easy to understand. It includes many practical examples of the four different roles we all take on. As you read, you won’t be able to help but think of the various people you interact with—and you will see them in a whole new light. The book has been developed over many years through team-building exercises, where participants have defended their behavior in demanding and complex collaborations. You will feel proud of yourself and your behavior when you realize the unconscious values that guide you. Unfortunately, not everyone shares your values.
Do you know the feeling of just clicking with certain people? Feeling a sense of connection with them? You can experience that same feeling with many others, even if they seem different from you. Even those closest to us may not share the same values, which is why differing opinions and decisions can lead to conflict. But imagine if you saw it as an advantage to be with someone who has different values—and therefore different strengths. Together, you can achieve so much more.
As normal human beings, we often focus on the personal traits that we struggle with the most when interacting with others. The problem is that we tend to see the downside of these traits and not the person's strengths.
