Sinossi

In "Rough and Ready; Or, Life Among the New York Newsboys," Horatio Alger Jr. immerses readers in the gritty yet hopeful world of 19th-century New York's impoverished youth. The narrative follows the life of a young newsboy navigating the challenges of poverty, highlighting themes of resilience, hard work, and the pursuit of the American Dream. Alger's engaging, didactic style blends humor with social commentary, emblematic of his larger oeuvre that seeks to inspire through tales of overcoming adversity. The book serves as both a poignant social document and an adventurous yarn that showcases the camaraderie and struggles of the newsboys, illustrating the intricate interplay of societal structures and individual agency. Horatio Alger Jr. was a prolific author known for his inspirational tales that often centered on disadvantaged boys finding success through diligence and virtue. Growing up in a modest family and witnessing the struggles of urban poverty firsthand informed his writing, leading him to create characters that resonated with the aspirations of many young readers. The Blonde From Barsoom by Robert F. Young - The Tarks were attacking, the bosomy princess was clinging to him in terror, and Harold Smith realized he was at the end of his plot-line. What a dilemma! And what an opportunity!!
For the most part, all Harold Worthington Smith's Martian stories ever netted him were standard rejection slips, but every now and then one or another of the editors to whom he submitted them would pen him a brief note to the effect that his writing indicated an unusually vivid imagination. However, they invariably added, his dialogue was stilted, his heroines were dimensionally impossible, and his stories were wish-fulfillment reveries in a Burroughs vein—unredeemed, unfortunately, by Burroughs' high-flown puritanical idealism.
Harold agreed with them wholeheartedly on point no. 1. Thanks to his ability to achieve total identification with his protagonists, he did have an unusually vivid imagination. Take this very minute, for instance: His main character—Thon Carther the Earthman—was standing on the ocher moss of the Martian dead-sea bottom beside the big-breasted blond princess whom he had rescued from Tarkia some two thousand words ago, fearlessly awaiting the oncoming horde of Tarks. But it wasn't really Thon Carther who was standing there, it was Harold Worthington Smith—a tall, tanned and handsome Harold Worthington Smith, to be sure, but Harold Worthington Smith just the same.
On points no. 2 and 3, however—be it said forthwith—he did not agree. He had, moreover, written to the editors in question and said so. A Burroughs influence, he had said, was an essential ingredient in the makeup of any science-fiction writer, and he was reasonably certain that he didn't exhibit one any more than half a dozen other scribes he could name.

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Ernest Cline comes a mostly true tall tale about an unexpected friendship between a young girl and a music-loving colony of bats. After losing her mother, thirteen-year-old Opal moves in with her uncle Roscoe on the family farm. There, Opal bonds with Uncle Roscoe over music and befriends a group of orphaned, music-loving bats. But just as the farm is starting to feel like home, the bats’ cave is destroyed by a big mining company with its sights set on the farmland next. If Opal and the bats can fit in anywhere, it’s the nearby city of Austin, home to their favorite music and a host of wonderfully eccentric characters. But with people afraid of the bats and determined to get rid of them, it’ll take a whole lot of courage to prove that this is where the bats—and Opal—belong.
