Sinopse

Set against the vivid and unforgiving backdrop of post-Napoleonic Paris, Père Goriot is one of Honoré de Balzac's most powerful and enduring masterpieces. First published in 1835 as part of his monumental series La Comédie Humaine, this novel is a penetrating exploration of ambition, love, sacrifice, and the corrosive influence of social ambition.

The story unfolds in a shabby boarding house run by the calculating Madame Vauquer, where residents from various walks of life coexist in quiet desperation. Among them is the aging and impoverished Père Goriot, a once-successful vermicelli manufacturer who has sacrificed his entire fortune for the happiness and social advancement of his two daughters, Anastasie and Delphine. Blinded by paternal devotion, Goriot fails to see that his daughters, now married into aristocratic families, are ashamed of his humble origins and exploit his unconditional love for their own gain.

Sharing the boarding house is Eugène de Rastignac, a young law student from the provinces who arrives in Paris with dreams of success and refinement. As he navigates the glittering yet ruthless world of Parisian high society, Rastignac becomes increasingly aware of the moral compromises required to rise within it. Guided by the enigmatic and dangerous Vautrin—another resident with a shadowy past—Rastignac faces a crucial choice: uphold his integrity or embrace ambition at any cost.

Through the tragic decline of Père Goriot and the moral awakening of Rastignac, Balzac paints a stark portrait of a society driven by money, status, and power. Paris itself becomes a living character—glittering on the surface yet merciless underneath. The novel exposes the fragile bonds of family, the illusions of social mobility, and the price of unchecked ambition.

At its heart, Père Goriot is a profound meditation on paternal love and societal corruption. Goriot's unwavering devotion stands in painful contrast to his daughters' cold indifference, creating one of literature's most moving portrayals of selfless love betrayed. Meanwhile, Rastignac's journey marks the emergence of a new kind of modern hero—one who must confront the moral ambiguities of a world where success often demands sacrifice of conscience.

Rich in psychological depth and social insight, Père Goriot remains a timeless exploration of human desire and the complexities of the heart. Balzac's keen observations and unforgettable characters ensure that this novel continues to resonate with readers, offering a compelling glimpse into the ambitions, heartbreaks, and moral dilemmas that define both 19th-century Paris and the human condition itself.

Stephen P H Butler Leacock FRSC was born on 30th December 1869 in Swanmore, near Southampton, England, the third of eleven children.
The family emigrated to Canada in 1876, settling on a 100-acre farm in Sutton, Ontario. There he was home-schooled until, funded by his grandfather, he was enrolled into the elite Upper Canada College in Toronto. Academically he was very strong and thence proceeded on to the University of Toronto to study languages and literature. After completing two years of study in only one, he was obliged to leave because his alcoholic father had abandoned the family and finances could not stretch to cover his education. Leacock now enrolled in a 3 month course to become a qualified high school teacher and thereby gain a regular income. For the next decade he worked at Upper Canada College.
His passion was economics and political theory and in 1899 he became a postgraduate student at the University of Chicago and earned his PhD. In 1906, he wrote ‘Elements of Political Science’, quickly adopted as a standard academic textbook for the next two decades and his most profitable book.
Although he had already published several humorous pieces it was only in 1910 that these works were collected and published and turned him into a commercially successful writer. Volume after volume now appeared almost annually and it was often said that more people had heard of him than of Canada.
Politically he was a social conservative. He opposed women’s right to vote and was a champion of Empire but also an advocate of social welfare legislation and wealth redistribution, but often caused friction with his racist views.
Stephen Leacock died on 28th March 1944 of throat cancer in Toronto, Canada. He was 74.

'Fate rules people's lives, and those who interfere with it do so to their sorrow.'

First published in 1902 in Harper's Monthly magazine, 'The Monkey's Paw' is a chilling short story that details the devastating price of interfering with fate.

When the White family come into the possession of a supposedly mystical talisman – a mummified monkey's paw – they are at first sceptical. According to the previous owner, the paw can grant three wishes, but only with a hellish cost. Mr. White, following encouragement from his son, flippantly wishes for £200, which will enable him to pay off the mortgage for his house. But when Mr. White's innocent wish comes true, a series of tragic and horrifying events ensue, changing the family forever. Deeply unnerving and pacey in equal measure, 'The Monkey's Paw' reminds its readers to be careful for what you wish for.
William Wymark Jacobs (1863 – 1943) was an English short story writer and dramatist. He is remembered for his humorous yet often macabre tales, which gained much popularity at the time of publication. Although much of his writing focused on marine life, his most famous work is the horror short story, 'The Monkey's Paw'.

Pangloss would have been right at home in a post-truth, social media world. You can imagine the tweets, “I was hanged and survived #soggyrope,” or, “#nosyphilisnochocolate.” Candide, written in 1759, was never more relevant than today. Blind obeisance and denial, barbarous villainy, greed, and rapacity, are all in a day’s toil for the young Candide. And this is in the best of all possible worlds!

Jerome Klapka Jerome was born on the 2nd May 1859 at Belsize House in Caldmore, Walsall, England.
His family were reduced to poverty whilst he was a toddler owning to failed investments in the local mining industry.
After several moves in declining circumstances Jerome became a pupil at St Marylebone Grammar School. His aim then was to go into politics, or even become a man of letters, but with the death of his father, when he was thirteen, and his mother two years later, now meant that he had to support himself and leave all thoughts of education behind.
He spent four years working for the London and North Western Railway, initially collecting coal that fell along the railway lines. Thereafter, using the name Harold Crichton, he tried his hand at acting but the repertory company he joined was stretched in its resources and, at times, relied on the actors to purchase their own props and costumes. After three years he tried journalism, teaching and work as a solicitor’s clerk. All came to nothing. Finally, in 1885, he had some success with ‘On the Stage―and Off’, a comic memoir collection of his stage experiences and his early attempts at acting.
Shortly thereafter he married and his honeymoon on the Thames became the inspiration for ‘Three Men in a Boat’. This of course was a wild success, both critically and commercially, but also his creative high point.
Although he was now able to write full time, he was never able to attain all the heights of that classic humorous novel. He remained a prolific writer of novels, plays and short stories and its from those classic works that these stories have been mined.
Jerome K Jerome died in Northampton General Hospital on the 14th June 1927 two weeks after suffering a paralytic stroke and a cerebral haemorrhage on a motoring tour. He was 68.
