Summary

In 'The Servile State and Other Analytical Studies,' Hilaire Belloc explores the concept of the Servile State - a society in which workers are essentially enslaved to the state or large corporations. Belloc's analytical approach delves deep into the political and economic structures that perpetuate this state of servitude, offering a critique that is both insightful and thought-provoking. Written in a clear and engaging style, the book is a key text in understanding the socio-political landscape of the early 20th century. Belloc's work is a blend of economic analysis and social commentary, making it a must-read for anyone interested in political theory and historical perspectives. Belloc's own experiences as a politician and historian undoubtedly influenced his perspective and inspired the writing of this impactful book. Rethinking global value chains...

The uneven recovery from the 2008 global financial crisis led to a stabilisation of international trade and capital flows. However, in the following years the surge of protectionist measures and deepening rivalries between big powers precipitated a crisis of the rule-based multilateral order. The pandemic crisis and the impact of the Russian invasion of Ukraine have boosted international economic fragmentation along geopolitical lines and may drive the global economy towards a reversal of the globalisation process that marked the second half of the 20th century.
Mounting cross-border restrictions on the exchange of essential goods and services during the recent poly-crisis has caused big disruptions in global production networks evamping the debate on the future of global economic interdependence, and the potentialities and downsides of reshoring, nearshoring or friendshoring processes. Indeed, the reconfiguration of global value chains (GVCs) has been increasingly debated as an economic policy tool to secure the supply of critical products and establish economic security at the national level. Such defensive posturing raises concerns over how to manage emerging trade-offs between the benefits of openness (economic integration) and those of autonomy (economic security).
The Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI), in the framework of its partnership with Intesa Sanpaolo, launched a task force of experts to contribute to the current discussion on the implications and possible future configurations of international production networks at a time of a resurgence of national economic security. The overall research effort has involved different regional perspectives and multidisciplinary approaches to shed light on the implications of the policy-driven process of international economic fragmentation in the fields of trade, technology, labour, international finance, global public goods and other dimensions of international economic relations.

Tanks of the Eastern Front -...

The Eastern Front of World War II was a vast and brutal theater of combat that spanned thousands of miles, from the icy steppes of northern Russia to the warm plains of the Ukraine. It was here that some of the largest and most decisive battles of the war took place, involving millions of soldiers, tanks, and aircraft. The conflict between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union began in 1941 with the German invasion under Operation Barbarossa, and it would continue until the final Soviet assault on Berlin in 1945. This epic struggle not only shaped the outcome of the war but also fundamentally altered the future of Europe and the global balance of power.

The war on the Eastern Front was marked by its sheer scale and the intensity of its combat. The German Army, bolstered by its formidable armored forces, initially swept across Soviet territory with alarming speed, encircling entire Soviet armies and capturing vast stretches of land. However, the Soviet Union, under the leadership of Joseph Stalin, mobilized its resources and manpower to repel the invasion. The conflict would evolve into a war of attrition, with both sides suffering staggering casualties in their attempt to either conquer or defend the heartland of Eastern Europe.

The role of tanks on the Eastern Front cannot be overstated. Both the Germans and Soviets relied heavily on armored vehicles, with each side developing and refining its tank forces throughout the war. German tanks, such as the Panzer III, IV, and the iconic Tiger, were initially superior in design and firepower. However, the Soviet Union, despite early setbacks, quickly adapted and mass-produced the T-34, which would become one of the most effective and influential tanks of the war. The T-34’s combination of mobility, armor, and firepower helped shift the balance of armored warfare in favor of the Soviets.

In 1924, the Virginia State Legislature passed the Racial Integrity Act. The act banned interracial marriage down to "a single drop" of African blood. Just three months later, Curtis W. Harris was born in Dendron, Virginia. Harris was the sixth child of impoverished sharecroppers, living in a desolate outpost of the Commonwealth, but in time he would lead the fight against the Racial Integrity Act and many other racially restrictive laws. Despite being arrested multiple times and beaten, Rev. Harris would help reverse centuries of racial discrimination that began when slaves first arrived in Virginia in 1619. Author William Paul Lazarus tells the story of Harris' determination in the face of intense hostility, which took him to the forefront of America's Civil Rights Movement, arm-in-arm with the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.
