Summary

This edition includes the following editor's analysis: Henry David Thoreau, the indomitable environmentalist

Originally published in 1863, "Excursions" is an anthology of several essays by American transcendentalist and environmentalist Henry David Thoreau. These essays represent Thoreau in many stages of his writing career, ranging from 1842 to 1862.
The anthology was published posthumously and contains an introduction entitled "Biographical Sketch" in which fellow transcendentalist Ralph Waldo Emerson provides a description of Thoreau.

The collection, other than R. W. Emerson's biography of Thoreau, contains nine of Thoreau’s most engaging and popular essays: Natural History of Massachusetts, A Walk to Wachusett, The Landlord, A Winter Walk, The Succession of Forest Trees, Walking, Autumnal Tints, Wild Apples, and Night and Moonlight.

The Life of Reason, subtitled "the Phases of Human Progress", is a book published in five volumes from 1905 to 1906, by Spanish-born American philosopher George Santayana (1863-1952). It consists of Reason in Common Sense, Reason in Society, Reason in Religion, Reason in Art, and Reason in Science. The work is considered to be the most complete expression of Santayana's moral philosophy [...]. Santayana's philosophy is strongly influenced by the materialism of Democritus and the refined ethics of Aristotle, with a special emphasis on the natural development of ideal ends. The Life of Reason is sometimes considered to be one of the most poetic and well-written works of philosophy in Western history. To supply but a single example, the oft-quoted aphorism of Santayana's, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it," may be found on p. 284 of Reason in Common Sense. We broke our new series on learning German down into different learning stages. Start with the "Lower Beginner" books followed by the "Beginner" and "Upper Beginner" books. Next, progress to the "Intermediate" series, then test and reinforce your knowledge with the "Conversations" series.
This audiobook is divided into units. While it provides different learning patterns and accommodates various needs, this audiobook focuses on helping you improve your ability to understand, speak, and memorise German. The sample will give you a taste of what you can look forward to.
In Unit 1 you will hear German decoded with each syllable spoken very slowly and clearly with repetition. Immediately before each sentence is spoken, you will hear the translation, so you will always understand what is being said.
Unit 2 focuses solely on increasing your listening ability, which will improve your abilities to engage in dialogue with a native German speaker. This chapter requires you to listen very carefully to nuances in the language.
By Unit 3 you will already notice progress in your abilities to speak and understand German. The spoken translation is followed by two repetitions in German at a completely natural speed. While you are learning to process naturally spoken German, Units 3 and 4 will help you memorise new vocabulary and full sentences.
In Unit 5 you can test yourself on how much you have learned. If you are having difficulties, we suggest you revisit the listening, speaking, or memorisation section of Units 1, 2 3 or 4, according to what you need more help with.

The Masonic legend of the building of Solomon's Temple does not in every particular parallel the Scriptural version, especially in those portions relating to CHiram Abiff. According to the Biblical account, this Master workman returned to his own country; in the Masonic allegory he is foully murdered. On this point A. E. Waite, in his New Encyclopædia of Freemasonry, makes the following explanatory comment:
"The legend of the Master-Builder is the great allegory of Masonry. It happens that his figurative story is grounded on the fact of a personality mentioned in Holy Scripture, but this historical background is of the accidents and not the essence; the significance is in the allegory and not in any point of history which may lie behind it."

When love asks everything of you, what do you give? In Holding Space, Deidra Jackson opens her heart in a deeply personal memoir about caring for her Vietnam veteran father. What began as helping with meals and doctor visits became a profound journey of faith, endurance, and rediscovering grace in the “long middle” between duty and love. Honest, tender, and unflinchingly human, this book is a companion for every caregiver who has ever felt invisible while holding everyone else together and every woman balancing the competing demands of motherhood, marriage, and leadership. Through moments of exhaustion and extraordinary love, Jackson reminds us that grace lives even in the hardest days and that love, in its quietest form, is still enough.

Why do we buy what we buy, vote the way we vote, eat what we eat, and say what we say? Why do we have the friends we have, and work and play as we do? It's our choice? Yes, but there are forces, often unseen, that shape every decision we make and every action we take.

These hidden, life-shaping values and ideas are not promoted through organized religions or rival philosophies but fostered by cultural habits, lifestyles and the institutional structures of society. Steve Wilkens and Mark Sanford shine a spotlight on the profound challenges to Christianity and faithful Christian living that come from worldviews that comprise the cultural soup we swim in.

The authors show how to detect the individualism, consumerism, nationalism, moral relativism, scientific naturalism, New Age thinking, postmodern tribalism, and salvation as therapy that fly under our radar. Building on the work of worldview thinkers like James Sire, this book helps those committed to the gospel story recognize those rival cultural stories that compete for our hearts and minds.
