Bergerud, author of Red Thunder, Tropic Lightning)   In the summer of 1969, while America was landing on the moon or rocking out at Woodstock, Jim Ross left his home in Oklahoma to enter the U.S. Army. He arrived in Vietnam in February 1970 to serve his tour, first with the armored personnel carriers of the 2nd Battalion of the 22nd Infantry Regiment (the 2/22 or the “Triple Deuce”) of the 25th Infantry. Written from the perspective a kid barely out of high school whose mission was to kill communists and whose goal was to survive, Outside the Wire is a thoughtful, action-packed memoir of one American soldier’s combat tour in Vietnam. Ross served as a rifleman, machine gunner, tunnel rat, and demolitions man with the 25th infantry and 1st Cavalry divisions. Beginning with a tense ambush patrol,  Ross doesn't let up through a year of hair-raising night watches, soggy humps through the jungle, and deadly encounters with the North Vietnamese, including such notable campaigns as the Cambodian incursion.

  The history of psychodynamic therapy traces back to the early 20th century when Freud, a neurologist, developed his theories of the unconscious mind, defense mechanisms, and the structure of the psyche. Freud’s ideas on human development, sexuality, and the role of unconscious drives sparked both widespread debate and fascination, establishing the foundation for psychodynamic therapy. Over time, various schools of thought and modifications emerged within psychodynamic theory, influenced by key figures such as Carl Jung, Melanie Klein, and Erik Erikson. Despite these developments, the core principles of psychodynamic therapy remain grounded in understanding how unconscious thoughts and past experiences shape present behavior. 
  Central to psychodynamic therapy is the belief that much of human behavior is influenced by internal, unconscious forces. These forces are often formed in early childhood and can result in unresolved conflicts, repressed memories, or unmet emotional needs. By exploring these unconscious factors, psychodynamic therapy seeks to uncover hidden patterns and help individuals develop a deeper understanding of themselves. The therapeutic relationship itself plays a vital role in this process, as the dynamics between the therapist and the client often mirror significant interpersonal relationships from the client’s past.

  The rise of feudal Japan marked a significant turning point in the nation's political and social history. Beginning in the late 8th to early 9th centuries, the centralized power of the imperial court in Kyoto began to wane. As emperors became more ceremonial figures, real power shifted into the hands of powerful landowning families and military clans in the provinces. These regional lords, or daimyo, started to assert control over their own territories, gradually weakening the authority of the imperial government. 
  This period of decentralization gave birth to a new system where local warlords governed through a network of vassals and military retainers. In return for loyalty and service, these retainers were granted land or a share in the profits from agricultural production. This land-based reward system laid the foundation for the feudal structure that would define medieval Japan for centuries to come. Unlike in Europe, where feudalism was based on strict legal contracts, Japan’s version emphasized personal loyalty and honor, often backed by military strength. 
  The emergence of powerful clans such as the Minamoto and Taira further accelerated the move toward feudal governance. Their rivalry culminated in the Genpei War (1180–1185), a brutal conflict that ultimately led to the downfall of the Taira clan and the rise of the Minamoto. In 1192, Minamoto no Yoritomo was appointed Seii Taishogun, or Shogun, by the emperor, establishing the first shogunate in Kamakura. This event marked the formal beginning of military rule in Japan and the creation of a dual-government system, where the emperor remained as a symbolic figure while the shogun held actual power.

But Tucker and Gaillard see another side too, a legacy rooted in the civil rights years that has given us political leaders like John Lewis, Jimmy Carter, Raphael Warnock, and Stacy Abrams. The authors raise the ironic possibility that the South might lead the way on the path to redemption. They bring a multi-racial perspective and years of political reporting to bear on a critical moment in American history, a time of racial reckoning and of democracy under siege.
