Sinossi

Following Roy's boyhood in post-war rural Bedfordshire Open Strings immerses us in the countryside with its changing seasons and characters who accompany Roy as he makes the transition from childhood to adolescence. Often naïve, Roy struggles to understand much of the behaviour he witnesses, yet makes discoveries about himself and the human condition.
Moving from 'Flood' with its echoes of Bruno Schulz's The Street of Crocodiles and merging of memory, imagination and dream to the onset of school, that results in a vow of silence, and through the friendships, rivalries, hero-worship, first loves and moments of pushing the boundaries of behaviour that come with these early life stages, we arrive at 'GDAE' in which violence between strangers leaves Roy fleeing the scene as he has fled from other dilemmas.
A poignant and convincing novella, Open Strings examines the way we make sense of the world with its moments of euphoria, its bewildering protocols, the strange behaviour of others and the small acts of betrayal that mark us deeply. Humane, engaging and authentic, Open Strings is a finely-observed collection and a compelling read.

In crafting this tale, I've drawn from a wealth of analogies and insights that resonate with your interests. Traveling through the pages of this audiobook will feel like a thrilling adventure in a foreign land, where every turn prompts new discoveries and every character unveils another layer of the story. Just as beading requires patience and precision, so does piecing together the elements of our mystery, each bead symbolizing a clue, each string forming a connection that leads us to the heart of the mystery. Imagine a quiet little town named Pinewood, where everyone knows each other’s name and no secret stays secret for long. The town is like a tightly woven fabric, each thread representing a personal connection. But what happens when one thread is pulled, and the entire fabric threatens to unravel? That's where our story begins. A routine annual festival takes an ominous turn when a prominent figure in the community suddenly vanishes. The event shakes Pinewood to its core, raising questions and suspicions as deep as the canyons that surround the town.

In 1923, journalist and budding fiction writer Ernest Hemingway penned eighteen original short stories and published them in the magazine The Little Review with the help of his friend Ezra Pound. Hemingway would later add to this collection and re-publish the stories in 1925 under the same title and - after adding an additional story - would again republish the entire volume in 1930, again as "in our time" (all in lower case). Presented here are the original eighteen "vignettes" as Hemingway originally published them in 1923. This collection of short stories would mark one of the most auspicious and earth-shattering debuts by an author in literary history and also introduced the world to the fictional character of Nick Adams, a protagonist Hemingway would re-visit repeatedly in his career. Within a few years, Hemingway would become known as one of the most important voices of his generation and his stark prose - lean and brutal at times - would be imitated by generations of writers who followed him.

    Definitely hotter.
Work throws us together, and there’s no avoiding him, even if I wanted to. And I don’t want to avoid him, although I know I should.
But Noah’s hiding something. And if I let myself get close, could his secret break my heart all over again?
Never Fall for Your One that Got Away is a laugh-out-loud, swoon-worthy rom com with a second-chance-love, a totally swoony guy, and sweet romance. Cary Scott's remarkable life story of spectacular good fortune, mixed with soul-crushing abuse, is frankly unbelievable. Even to Cary himself. In a series of disturbing, unfiltered monologues, Cary unburdens himself of his memories -- of being raised by a psychopathic single mother who was abandoned by her gay husband, of becoming the target of a pedophile, of becoming morbidly obese, followed by quack treatments that boomerang him alarmingly into anorexia. Cary recalls being a bullied gay teenager who literally crucifies himself with a hammer and nails to get out of gym class. From a psych ward, he finds himself instantly famous after an unintentionally homoerotic poem he wrote for a high school assignment finds its way to becoming the #1 pop song in the nation. In the years that follow, Cary's life nosedives again and again, yet he always finds himself rescued by bizarre deus-ex-machina occurrences. All these tales, however, are placed into doubt after his former therapist is accused in the media of implanting false memories in patients. Cary is labeled a pathological liar in a national magazine cover story. Refusing to believe that his exceptional life never actually happened, Cary creates a grotesque, secret, museum to himself filled with artefacts of atrocities and miracles which prove that his memories are true - but is it only a museum of lies?
