  Since the early days of human warfare, which may date back to the Stone Age, combatants have sought to gain an advantage through the acquisition of secret information. With the growth of technology, a parallel advantage was sought through the application of numerous types of torture. In the 19th century, the concept of manipulation was added to military tactics, an attempt to influence the minds of assassins, double agents, and world leaders alike to act against their natures. Given the incredible advances in technology brought about by global warfare, the years immediately after World War II would bring about the most extensive formal study of the many procedures by which this effect could be accomplished. 
  The push to develop torture and manipulation techniques was driven by an “exaggerated fear”[1] propagated by the American military and national press of “mind-control.” American officials believed that Soviet, Chinese, and North Korean communists had reached the “Holy Grail”[2] of mental warfare, and that the United States must follow suit or be left behind. In time, the “transformation of brainwashing from a system of coercive propaganda to a secret program of human enslavement”[3] reflected cultural demands placed on the idea by the Korean War and was preceded by interest in electromagnetics. To the embarrassment of many Americans, 5,000 of the 7,200 American POWs in North Korea signed confessions and petitions to end the war. Most recanted their actions once free, but many did not, and some refused to return to their homeland. 
  In the end, the peak of the American experimental regimen on unwitting humans grew to vast proportions and splintered into a myriad of disciplines by the mid-20th century. The program came to be known as MK-Ultra after several early incarnations, and to this day, the name has become synonymous with controversy, even as the program’s experiments and results remain relatively mysterious.

  Leadership under pressure: the personal account of the commander of the Royal Naval Task Group deployed to Libya in 2011.In April 2011, the newly created Royal Navy Response Force Task Group deployed to the Mediterranean to provide a range of military options in response to the Arab Spring. For the next six months the group planned and prepared for a range of potential operations including noncombatant evacuations from Libya, Yemen and Syria, maritime interdiction operations off the Libyan coast, and amphibious landings.  On 3 June the group began launching attack helicopter strikes into Libya and in the nights that followed planned 47 and executed 22 strikes destroying a range of targets including: 54 vehicles, 2 rigid hull boats, 2 BM 21 rocket launchers, 4 main battle tanks, 1 zsu antiaircraft vehicle and 3 command and control nodes. The operation saw the first operational use of Apaches from the sea and the first embarkation of US Army combat search and rescue teams and Blackhawk helicopters in an RN warship.  This is a personal account by the Group’s Commander, which brings to life the challenges of command – including authorizing strikes and mitigating risk to UK aircrew – in a complex and challenging environment. It reveals how closely the RN Group worked with its French counterpart, the support provided by the United States, together with the complexity of working alongside NATO and of simultaneously dealing with a range of UK authorities.  This is a story of leadership under pressure and the remarkable professionalism of all involved and the bravery of Army aircrew. It was modern defense and joinery at its best – British Army and USAF helicopters operating from RN ships, supported by Fleet Air Arm aircraft and fixed wing jets as part of a largely air campaign.

  The USS Indianapolis was a Portland-class heavy cruiser of the United States Navy, commissioned in 1932, and it played a vital role in the Pacific theater during World War II. Its most significant and tragic moment came in 1945, during its final mission. The ship was tasked with delivering critical components for the atomic bomb that would later be dropped on Hiroshima, Japan. This mission, which involved transporting the bomb's uranium core to the island of Tinian, was classified, and few knew about the importance of the cargo aboard the ship. 
  After successfully completing its mission and delivering the components to Tinian on July 26, 1945, the Indianapolis set sail for the Philippines, where it would rendezvous with other ships in the Pacific fleet. The ship’s captain, Charles B. McVay III, had orders to take the cruiser directly to its next destination, avoiding the traditional convoy routes to reduce the risk of submarine attack. With the war nearing its end and Japan’s defeat imminent, the ship's journey seemed routine, and there was little concern about the potential dangers ahead. The USS Indianapolis was an experienced and battle-tested ship, having served in key naval engagements throughout the war, including the Battle of Leyte Gulf and the Battle of the Philippine Sea. 
  However, the absence of a convoy left the Indianapolis vulnerable. On the night of July 29, 1945, while traveling through the Philippine Sea, the ship was struck by two torpedoes fired by the Japanese submarine I-58. The attack tore through the hull, causing devastating damage. Within minutes, the ship began to sink, and the crew was thrown into chaos. Many of the crew members perished instantly, while others scrambled into the water, trying to escape the fiery wreckage of the ship. The survivors faced an unimaginable nightmare as they found themselves stranded in the open ocean, with little hope of immediate rescue.

  While his masterpiece On the Road languished on the desks of unresponsive editors, Kerouac turned to Buddhism, and in 1953 began writing reading notes on the subject intended for his friend Allen Ginsberg. As his Buddhist study and meditation practice intensified, what had begun as notes evolved into a vast, all-encompassing work of nonfiction into which he poured his life, incorporating poems, haiku, prayers, journal entries, fragments of letters, ideas about writing, sketches, and more. The final manuscript, completed in 1956, was as visually complex as the writing: each page was unique, typed in patterns and interlocking shapes. The elaborate form that Kerouac so painstakingly gave his books is recreated in this typeset facsimile.
