"Gusev"  is an 1890 short story by Anton Chekhov.
Several discharged soldiers return home from the Far East by ship. Confined to the hospital cabin, they are all apparently dying of consumption and seemingly indifferent to their condition. Among them are Gusev, a mild, racist, slightly dim man, and the mysterious Pavel Ivanovich, an ardent "protester" who often goes on diatribes (many of which Gusev either misunderstands or ignores) about his lifelong commitment to telling people "the truth to their faces". Ivanovich is proud of having riled every single person around him during his three years' service in the East, and thinks all the other men present are fools. He later reveals that he is the son of a priest and had to disguise himself as a peasant to buy his third-class ticket. One day, while Gusev is asleep, Pavel Ivanovich dies. One of the other soldiers, seeing that Gusev will also die shortly, helps him up to the ship's deck, where they look at the waves crashing into one another. Several days later, Gusev dies. His body is sewn into a sailcloth sack and weighted. After a short prayer, it is thrown into the ocean, where a shark bites at it. Up above, the ocean begins to reflect the colors of the sky, "...tender, joyous, passionate colours for which it is hard to find a name in human speech".

The Russian novel has a reputation that is immense, both in narrative and in length. Unquestionably though the ideas, themes and characters make many novels rightly revered as world class, as icons of literature.

Perhaps an easier way to enjoy a wider selection of the Russian heritage, with its varied and glorious literary talents, is with the short story. These gems sparkle and beguile the mind with their characters and narrative, exploring facets of society and the human condition that more Western authors somehow find more difficult to navigate, or to explore, explain and relate to.

The Russian short story is, in many respects, in a genre of its own. It is at its captivating best whether it’s an exploration of real-life experiences, through fantasy and fables and on to total absurdity.

In a land so vast it is unsurprising that it is a world almost unto itself. Cultures and landscapes of differing hues are packed together bound only by the wilful bonds and force of Empire.

The stories in this collection traverse the decades where one might be a serf under an absolute monarch, and the reality of that was pretty near to slavery, into an emancipation of sorts in the fields, or towns under the despotic will of landowners and the rich into the upheavals of Empire and then the overthrow of the ruling class and its replacement by the communists, who promised equality for all and delivered a society where the down-trodden remained the lowest yet vital cog of the state machine and its will.

Whilst Tolstoy, Gogol, Dostoevsky, Pushkin and Chekhov are a given in any Russian collection we also explore and include Andreyev, Korolenko, Turgenev, Blavatsky and many others to create a world rich and dense across a sprawling landscape of diverse people, riddled with the class and unfairness in perhaps some of the most turbulent times that Russia has ever experienced.

"Know your own happiness. You want nothing but patience—or give it a more fascinating name: call it hope."

When Mr. Henry Dashwood dies, his estate passes to his son from a first marriage, leaving his second wife and three daughters—Elinor, Marianne, and Margaret—nearly destitute. Forced to move to the modest Barton Cottage in Devonshire, the sisters must navigate the treacherous waters of love and social standing with very different philosophies. Elinor, representing "Sense," possesses a cautious, composed nature that hides a deep well of emotion. Marianne, representing "Sensibility," is passionate, impulsive, and unashamedly romantic. As they encounter the reserved Edward Ferrars, the dashing but unreliable John Willoughby, and the steadfast Colonel Brandon, both sisters must learn that life requires a delicate balance between the head and the heart.

A Study in Contrasts: Austen brilliantly pits the restraint of the Enlightenment against the rising tide of Romanticism. Through the sisters' parallel heartbreaks, she examines whether it is better to suffer in dignified silence or to give oneself entirely over to the "luxury of grief."

The Reality of Regency Survival: Beyond the romance, the novel is a sharp critique of the economic vulnerability of women in the 1800s. Without an inheritance, the Dashwood sisters' only "career" path is marriage, making every social interaction a high-stakes negotiation for their future security.

The Redemption of the Heart: From the rainy rescue on the hills of Devonshire to the painful betrayals in London ballrooms, Sense and Sensibility is a story of resilience. It is a masterpiece that proves that while "sense" may protect the heart, "sensibility" is what makes life worth living.
