Sinossi

Frank L. Packard's "The Red Ledger" presents a gripping narrative that intertwines themes of justice and revenge within a seedy underworld. This crime thriller, emblematic of early 20th-century American literature, employs a fast-paced, hard-boiled style characterized by terse dialogue and vivid descriptions. The story delves into the intricate lives of its morally ambiguous characters while exploring the depths of human emotion and the consequences of choices made in dire circumstances, all set against the backdrop of an evolving urban landscape that reflects the tumult of the era. Packard, a prominent Canadian author known for his crime and adventure novels, was greatly influenced by his experiences as a journalist and his fascination with the complexities of human nature. His adept understanding of crime, borne from his investigative background, informs the compelling narrative of "The Red Ledger." Packard's interests in justice and the psychological motivations that drive individuals to extremes place him at the forefront of the early detective fiction genre, making his work resonate with an audience seeking both entertainment and insight. Readers who appreciate intense psychological thrillers and morally complex characters will find "The Red Ledger" to be an irresistible addition to their literary collection. Packard's skillful storytelling and deep exploration of human motivations offer a rich and engaging experience, making this novel an essential read for both fans of the genre and those intrigued by the darker sides of human nature.

Margaret Oliphant Wilson was born on 4th April 1828 in East Lothian in Scotland but spent her childhood in Midlothian, Glasgow and Liverpool.

She wrote from a young age and in 1849 had her first novel about the Scottish Free Church movement, a cause her parents sympathized with, published. Her next, ‘Caleb Field’, a couple of years later, led to a lifelong association with Blackwood Magazine to which she contributed more than a 100 articles and reviews.

In May 1852, she married her cousin, Frank Wilson Oliphant, an artist working in stained glass, and settled in Camden, London. Together they had six children but tragically three died in infancy.

Unfortunately, Frank developed tuberculosis and so they moved in January 1859 to Florence, and then south to Rome, where he died. Margaret was devastated and was left with the burden of supporting herself and their three children.

She returned to England and with her prolific literary work increased her commercial reputation and the size of her reading audience. Margaret worked tirelessly to sustain her popularity with her supernatural tales and historical fiction.

Unfortunately, her family life continued to be fraught with tragedies due to the further death of her one remaining daughter, financial ruin for her alcoholic brother and unfulfilled ambitions for her two sons followed by their deaths in 1890 and 1894. She had settled in Windsor near Eton where her sons had been educated in 1866 and was buried there following her death on 25th June, 1897.

Despite the short time she lived in Scotland, much of her writing displays strong connections in terms of settings, themes and its oral tradition.

Margaret was admired for her range of supernatural tales, which resonated with her fascination for the afterlife and given her own experience, provided a sense of comfort to those grieving.

In this story a family’s return from India to Scotland is soon brought to a state of tension when their fragile son experiences hallucinations. The pursuit of the truth brings many consequences.

"She talks so much, she should have two sets of teeth."

I haven't seen Stanley Shelton since the flamingo keychain with the campervan key dangled from his fingertips as he ripped the Maserati keys out of my grip after my ex-now-dead husband left me broke and penniless, until now.

Stanley claims the Diamond Swamp Mob is after him and he needs my help. Something about my past, but I didn't take him too seriously until someone was murdered in Stanley's rented room at the Milkery. The person just so happened to have a tattoo I've seen before.

One problem, the tattoo is a brand from a mob in New York City.

Sheriff Hank Sharp has hauled Stanley down to the Normal sheriff's department for the murder, leaving it up to me and the Laundry Club Ladies to clear Stanley's name. Looks like I'm driving my campervan back to New York City and make it a girls trip.

I sure hope I can get to the mob boss before he sends anyone else to Happy Trails Campground to finish the job and get revenge on who actually killed the mobster.

Welcome to Normal, Kentucky, where nothing is normal!
