Sinopse

Francis Bacon (1561-1626), 1st Viscount of St. Alban, 1st Baron of Verulam, was an English philosopher and statesman who served as Attorney General and Lord Chancellor of England under King James I. Stuart.  A great scholar and an initiate of many ancient schools of wisdom, Bacon argued for the importance of natural philosophy, guided by scientific method, and his works remained influential throughout the Scientific Revolution.Francis Bacon's alleged connection to the Rosicrucians and Freemasonry has been widely discussed by authors and scholars in many books. Although there is no substantial evidence of Bacon's affiliation with Freemasonry, there are several elements that connect him with the Rosicrucian brotherhood and the highly secret Pythagorean Order. The Bacon’s study Prometheus and the State of Man, which we propose to our readers today, is taken from The Wisdom of the Ancients, a philosophical treatise written by the English philosopher and initiate in the early 17th century. It is a collection of ancient myths and fables from various cultures, including Greek, Roman, and Egyptian. Bacon uses these stories to illustrate his philosophical ideas and teachings, drawing parallels between the ancient wisdom and contemporary knowledge.

Wisdom is a multifaceted quality that transcends the mere accumulation of facts and figures. It is the ability to perceive the deeper significance behind everyday experiences and to understand the interplay between knowledge and life’s unpredictable nature. Unlike raw information or even learned expertise, wisdom is characterized by a profound sense of balance and clarity that arises from an open mind and a reflective heart. It is an inner compass that guides us through the complexities of human existence, allowing us to navigate moral dilemmas, understand subtle nuances, and ultimately live in harmony with our values and the world around us.
At its core, wisdom emerges from the synthesis of diverse experiences, insights, and personal reflections. It is the culmination of lessons learned from both successes and failures, each contributing to a broader perspective on life. The journey to wisdom involves not only the acquisition of knowledge but also the deliberate practice of introspection. This process enables individuals to filter out the noise of everyday distractions and focus on what truly matters. Through this continuous engagement with our inner selves, we begin to understand that true wisdom is not static but a dynamic process of growth and self-improvement.
A key element of wisdom is the recognition of our own limitations. Understanding that no one can know everything opens the door to humility, which in turn fosters a mindset of continuous learning. This humility allows us to appreciate the complexity of life and respect the insights offered by others, regardless of their background or status. It is in this space of mutual respect and genuine curiosity that the seeds of wisdom are planted, nurtured by a willingness to question, reflect, and adapt. Furthermore, wisdom is not solely an individual pursuit; it flourishes in communities where shared experiences and collective reflection pave the way for deeper understanding.

MacArthur Fellow and National Humanities Medalist Rebecca Newberger Goldstein, author of Plato at the Googleplex and The Mind-Body Problem, returns with a revelatory book about the primal drive that in our species alone has been transformed into one of our most persistent and universal motivations: the longing to matter.Drawing on biology, psychology, and philosophy, Goldstein argues that this need to matter—and the various "mattering projects" it inspires—is the source of our greatest progress and our deepest conflicts: the very crux of the human experience.Goldstein brings this profound idea to life through unforgettable stories of famous and not-so-famous people pursuing their unique mattering projects. These portraits illuminate how our instinct for significance shapes identity, relationships, culture, and conflict—and they point the way to a future where we all might see that there is, fundamentally, enough mattering to go around.Deeply revealing and insightful, The Mattering Instinct is a must-listen for those curious about why we seek to matter to ourselves and others—and how this insatiable longing that drives us apart may be the key to finally understanding each other.
