Virtual reality (VR) has long been a concept of science fiction, but today, it is a rapidly evolving technology shaping industries, entertainment, and even human interactions. From its early beginnings as a theoretical concept to the sophisticated headsets and immersive environments of today, VR has transformed from a novelty into a powerful tool that influences the way people work, learn, and socialize. While the promise of virtual worlds seems limitless, there are also significant concerns about its long-term effects on society, privacy, and even human psychology.
The origins of VR date back further than most people realize. The idea of creating artificial environments that simulate reality can be traced back to the early 20th century. Flight simulators in the 1920s provided the first taste of what would later become VR training programs. In the 1960s, innovators such as Ivan Sutherland and Morton Heilig developed early prototypes of head-mounted displays and immersive cinema experiences. However, technological limitations prevented these early experiments from reaching mainstream adoption. It wasn’t until the late 20th and early 21st centuries that computing power, graphics capabilities, and internet connectivity made VR a viable and widely accessible technology.
Breakthroughs in VR hardware and software have enabled increasingly realistic and engaging experiences. High-resolution headsets, motion tracking, and artificial intelligence now allow users to step into digital environments that respond dynamically to their movements and actions. Industries ranging from gaming and entertainment to healthcare and education have embraced VR as a revolutionary tool. Doctors use VR to simulate surgeries, businesses conduct remote meetings in virtual spaces, and educators transport students to historical landmarks without ever leaving the classroom.

    Profit over Privacy - How...

In Profit over Privacy, Matthew Crain gives internet surveillance a much-needed origin story by chronicling the development of its most important historical catalyst: web advertising.

Profit over Privacy uses the 1990s as its backdrop to show how the massive data-collection infrastructure that undergirds the internet today is the result of twenty-five years of technical and political economic engineering. Crain considers the social causes and consequences of the internet's rapid embrace of consumer monitoring, detailing how advertisers and marketers adapted to the existential threat of the internet and marshaled venture capital to develop the now-ubiquitous business model called "surveillance advertising." He draws on a range of primary resources from government, industry, and the press and highlights the political roots of internet advertising to underscore the necessity of political solutions to reign in unaccountable commercial surveillance.

Surveillance advertising is the result of political choices—not the inevitable march of technology. Unlike many other countries, the United States has no internet privacy law. A fascinating prehistory of internet advertising giants like Google and Facebook, Profit over Privacy argues that the internet did not have to turn out this way and that it can be remade into something better.

A lively and engaging account of one human's relationship with a remarkable and charming orphaned beaver kit.On May 10, 2020, an orphaned beaver kit was found in St. Albans, Vermont and handed over to John Aberth, a licensed volunteer wildlife rehabilitator. Over the next two years, John raised the kit, whom he nicknamed "BK," and prepared him for release back into the wild. During that time, John and BK developed a special and unique bond, which John documented in a daily diary. That diary became the basis for Bringing Up Beaver, a lively and engaging account of one human's relationship with a wild animal.Bringing Up Beaver is more than just a feel-good story about human encounters with nature. Full of fascinating observations about beaver behavior and biology, Bringing Up Beaver also documents the unique challenges and obstacles to be faced and overcome in rehabbing a wild beaver kit. Populating the story are plenty of other wild creatures that John encountered in the course of his rehab, including other beavers—one of whom became BK's mate—as well as hawks, owls, mink, and weasels. For anyone who has been charmed by a beaver's smile or enjoyed books like Fox and I and Eager, Bringing Up Beaver is a must-listen that will give us a new perspective on the wildlife and nature that exists all around us.

The massively popular 1990 novel Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton and its subsequent movie adaptations led to a huge resurgence in interest in dinosaurs and the prehistoric world. That interest continues to the present day, even though most of the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park weren’t actually from the Jurassic period. Triceratops, Velociraptor, Tyrannosaurus Rex and the huge sauropods such as Brachiosaurus that feature in the book and movies all actually belong to the Late Cretaceous period, more than 40 million years after the end of the Jurassic. Regardless, the movie made certain kinds of dinosaurs instantly recognizable, even if associated with the wrong era.
Thanks to the movie, there has been some unwitting confusion over the identity of the Velociraptor, and this confusion was due in large part to the fact the name sounds far more scary than the creature to which the name originally belonged. Moreover, the creature to which the label was applied in the novel and movie was actually a distant cousin named Deinonychus, but as the story goes, the author, Michael Crichton, thought “Velociraptor” sounded “more dramatic.” The actual Velociraptor lived not in the badlands of North America, but in the badlands of central-eastern Asia, and it was not nearly as intimidating as Deinonychus. In fact, the main species of genus Velociraptor - Velociraptor mongoliensis - was no bigger than a turkey. Thus, in a very real sense, the Velociraptor has taken on a larger-than-life reputation.
