  Cornelia Arnolda Johanna "Corrie" ten Boom (April 15, 1892 - April 15, 1983) was a Dutch watchmaker who worked with her father Casper and other family members to help, reportedly, 800 Jews escape the Nazi Holocaust during World War II by hiding them in their home. Eventually, the family was caught, and ten Boom was arrested and sent to Ravensbrück concentration camp, but released after ten months due to a clerical error. Later in life, ten Boom wrote, "The Hiding Place," a biography that recounts the story of her family's efforts and how she was able to find hope while imprisoned at the concentration camp. It was later made in to a movie. The following is part one of a speech ten Boom gave called, Authority Over Demons.

  Debating Gender - A Study of...

  This work is an in-depth examination of medieval and contemporary discussions of gender in Islam, focusing in particular on views of women.
  Ms. Harhash wisely introduces the discussion by clarifying the legal status of women in medieval Islam, which provides a useful framework for her discussion.
  While her sympathy clearly lies with Averroes, I was particularly impressed by the chapter on al Ghazali, which traces a nuanced picture of al Ghazali's approach to women, highlighting striking differences in his various works and connecting his (to the modern ear) unpalatable claims about women- to his embracement of Sufism.
  While Ms. Harhash is attracted to the "progressive" view of Averroes, she offers a lucid analysis of his core egalitarian statements in the commentary on the Republic without omitting to point out that his philosophical position is in some tension with the more traditional position in forming his legal decisions.
  Ibn Taymiyyah is probably the biggest villain in Ms. Harhash's narrative and is portrayed as a kind of antipode to Averroes.
  With respect to modern discussion, she focuses on Nawal El Saadawi and Fatima Mernissi, where she situates the modern discussion vis a vis its medieval counterpart and highlights differences and commonalities.
  Ms. Harhash does a good job showing how the critique of the oppression of women in modern days leads to the same question that she had already addressed in Averroes, namely whether a critique of unjust structures in contemporary Islamic societies can be separated from a critique of Islam itself.
  Overall, the thesis is a remarkable achievement. Ms. Harhash reconstructs the medieval and modern discussion with intellectual confidence and independence and brings out similarities and differences that are genuinely illuminating.

  The Ethiopian Great Famine of 2000 was not an isolated event, but rather the culmination of a complex and interconnected set of factors rooted in the country's historical, environmental, and political landscape. To understand the origins of this crisis, it is essential to look back at Ethiopia’s long history of food insecurity and vulnerability to famine. While droughts have long been a natural part of Ethiopia’s climate cycles, the frequency and impact of famine have often been magnified by human elements, particularly governance and socio-economic structures. 
  In the years leading up to 2000, Ethiopia experienced several severe droughts, but the early signs of the looming crisis were evident by the late 1990s. Climatic shifts, including the failure of critical rainy seasons, devastated crop yields and dried up grazing lands, particularly in the country's eastern and southern regions. For a population heavily dependent on subsistence agriculture, these environmental changes meant immediate food shortages and a rapid decline in household resilience. What might have remained a regional hardship quickly evolved into a nationwide emergency due to the lack of sufficient preventative action. 
  Government response in the early stages was slow and limited by bureaucratic challenges and political distractions, including the aftermath of the Ethiopia-Eritrea war that ended in 2000. Resources were stretched thin, and infrastructure remained underdeveloped, particularly in rural areas where the famine was most severe. Early warning systems existed but were either underutilized or their signals ignored, contributing to the delayed mobilization of aid. The country’s centralization of power also complicated coordination with local authorities, which further hindered rapid intervention efforts.

Spotlighting the invaluable work of Black educators, this volume reveals that although they are underrepresented in educational institutions, they have profound positive influence not only on students of color but also on school climate and on all of society. 
   
   
   
  Contributions from both emerging and established scholars lay out the historical and contemporary issues that confront Black educators. Viewing this landscape through the lens of BlackCrit and other race-centric perspectives, the contributors critically frame and explicitly name the challenges. They make plain that a common thread in the Black experience in United States schools is antiblackness, which remains an endemic feature of United States society even as recent social justice campaigns and public discourse on Critical Race Theory have brought greater awareness to longstanding inequities. 
   
   
   
  This work illuminates the efforts of Black educators to fight oppression and institutionalized racism in schools. It provides strategies that district and school leadership can adopt to recruit, retain, and support Black educators in schools.
