Did you know that many of these museums aren't just quirky tourist traps but important sites for cultural preservation? The book delves into the motivations behind why people create and visit these museums.

The book progresses across chapters, examining museums dedicated to food, the paranormal, and even the mundane, highlighting the unifying themes and demonstrating the cultural value of these institutions. By studying these museums, one can gain a better understanding of the increasing democratization of historical and artistic representation.

The article on which this audio book is based was published in the 'New York American' on October 20th, 1912.
The author, Dr. Paul Schliemann, was the grandson of Heinrich Schliemann (1822 - 1890), a founder of modern archaeology. In this famous archaeological hoax he makes outrageous and sensational claims about the lost continent Atlantis, and his grandfather’s research.
The text was written in an age when many of the Victorian adventure writers, like H. Rider Haggard in Britain, Emilio Salgari in Italy and Karl May in Germany topped reading lists. In 1912, the jungle calls of Tarzan echoed through American pulp magazines for the very first time.
Paul Schliemann capitalizes on the contemporary craze for his grandfather’s archaeological discoveries, for lost worlds and legendary characters like the queen of Sheba and Prester John. Since 1907, Howard Carter had been excavating in Egypt, and in 1922 Carter made his historical discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun.
Paul Schliemann’s article is highly entertaining, and features passages reminiscent of Indiana Jones. Michael Henrik Wynn, the editor of the educational net radio stream Historyradio.org, gives a spirited performance of what has become a classic and much loved hoax in archaeological circles.

Roger Keith "Syd" Barrett (January 6, 1946 to July 7, 2006) was an English singer, songwriter, guitarist and co-founder of Pink Floyd. He was the band's frontman and primary songwriter for their debut album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967), and portions of their second album, A Saucerful of Secrets (1968). In April 1968, Barrett was ousted from Pink Floyd amid speculation of mental illness and his use of psychedelic drugs. Asuka Period - Buddhism Reform...

The Asuka Period (538–710) marks a pivotal era in Japan’s history, serving as the transitional phase between the ancient Kofun Period and the Nara Period. This era is often considered the birthplace of Japanese civilization, a time when the political, religious, and cultural foundations of the nation began to take shape. It was during this period that Japan first came into direct contact with continental Asia, particularly through the introduction of Buddhism, the establishment of a centralized government, and the adoption of Chinese-style political and legal systems.
The early years of the Asuka Period were dominated by the Soga clan, who played a crucial role in the political and religious developments of the time. Their influence can be seen in their advocacy for the adoption of Buddhism, which arrived in Japan from Korea around the mid-sixth century. Buddhism’s introduction, however, was met with resistance from the powerful native Shinto religious leaders and aristocracy, creating a conflict that would shape the religious landscape of Japan for centuries to come.
Despite early opposition, Buddhism gradually took hold in Japan. The Soga clan, with the support of the royal family, used Buddhism as a tool to consolidate power and gain legitimacy. By the late 6th century, the religion had become deeply integrated into the fabric of Japanese society, influencing not only spiritual practices but also politics, art, and culture.
