Entomology - The World of Insects

Insects are among the most diverse and ecologically significant organisms on Earth, playing essential roles in maintaining the balance of ecosystems. As the largest group of living creatures, with millions of species identified and many more yet to be discovered, insects contribute to biodiversity, food webs, and ecosystem stability in ways that are often overlooked. Their presence and activities influence plant life, soil health, and the survival of countless other species, making them indispensable to natural processes.
One of the most crucial roles insects play is pollination. Many flowering plants, including a significant portion of the world’s crops, depend on insects such as bees, butterflies, and beetles to transfer pollen between flowers, enabling reproduction. Without insect pollinators, ecosystems would struggle to sustain plant diversity, and agricultural yields would decline drastically, threatening food supplies for both humans and wildlife. The economic and ecological value of insect pollination is immeasurable, reinforcing the importance of conserving pollinator populations.
In addition to pollination, insects are fundamental to decomposition and nutrient cycling. Species such as dung beetles, termites, and various flies break down organic matter, returning nutrients to the soil and promoting healthy plant growth. This process not only recycles essential elements but also prevents the accumulation of decaying material, contributing to ecosystem cleanliness and balance. By decomposing dead plants and animals, insects help maintain the natural cycle of life, supporting plant regeneration and sustaining the broader environment.

Bring structure, clarity, and purpose to every reading.   For many who read tarot—and those new to tarot—spreads can offer a lot of power, clarity, and purpose to readings. Tarot spreads, intentional arrangements for tarot cards that include a particular meaning or prompt for each card, help us to ask focused, direct questions of our cards. Rather than focusing on premade cookie-cutter layouts, Meg Jones Wall takes you to the very foundation of tarot spreads so that you can understand how and why a spread is created and how it works. This book will walk you through reading spreads as well as writing and revising original spreads, giving you everything you need to understand, develop, tweak, and test tarot spreads of your very own.  Learn to adapt and revise card spreads to deepen your exploration.   Meg encourages you to release yourself from the expectation that you need to use a spread precisely as written in order to get the full benefit of a layout in your reading. Spreads are infinitely customizable to suit your own needs, preferences, and experience level. While the cards can offer clarity in a variety of ways, tarot spreads can help us be more direct about what we want to know, explore, question, and understand. No matter our question, concern, or situation, tarot spreads empower us to be clear about what we need from our reading.   At the core of every spread are the prompts—the meanings given to each card positioned in a layout. So that you can more effectively write and design your own spread, Meg offers over 200 prompts and suggestions for simple one-card to five-card layouts for a variety of intentions from relationships to self-awareness to community to wealth, and includes special recommended spreads for lunar cycles, the zodiac, the archetypes, the sabbats, the elements, and more.

The Old Kingdom of Egypt, often referred to as the “Age of the Pyramids,” marks one of the most prosperous and significant periods in the history of ancient Egypt. This era, which lasted from around 2686 to 2181 BCE, witnessed the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt under a single ruler and the establishment of the pharaoh as the central figure of both politics and religion. It was a time when the foundations of the Egyptian state were solidified, and the monumental pyramids, including the Great Pyramid of Giza, were built.
The rise of the Old Kingdom began with the third dynasty, following the unification of Egypt by King Narmer (also known as Menes). Narmer’s victory over the rival kingdoms of Upper and Lower Egypt not only led to the establishment of the first dynasty but also laid the groundwork for the idea of divine kingship. The pharaoh, believed to be the living god Horus, became the supreme ruler, a position that was both political and religious. This divine status provided the pharaoh with unquestionable authority, ensuring stability and order across the kingdom.
Throughout the Old Kingdom, the notion of kingship was reinforced through monumental construction projects, such as the construction of step pyramids and later the smooth-sided pyramids that are so emblematic of ancient Egypt. The earliest monumental stone structure, the Step Pyramid of Djoser, built during the third dynasty, symbolized the pharaoh’s ability to control nature and destiny. These impressive structures were not just tombs for the pharaohs but also symbols of their eternal power and the journey to the afterlife.

Drawing on her work at a shelter, her experiences living with two rescue dogs of her own, and years of research, bestselling author and Boston Globe columnist Amy Sutherland takes us on an unforgettable journey into the special world of rescue and shelter dogs—and the growing number of dedicated people who are deeply invested in saving these precious lives.
Terrified Penny Jane; brassy but filthy Dixie Lou; tough-guy Dingo; and the crazed, nippy jester, Walter Joe. These are not your average cute-and-cared-for, well-trained pups—these are shelter dogs. Scared, aggressive, so painfully shy that they can’t look you in the eye, they have languished so long without attention that they are slipping into a dark place, and soon will no longer be able to bond with people.
A member of the elite corps of volunteers at Boston’s Animal Rescue League, Amy Sutherland began walking shelter dogs in 2001 and has patiently helped train canines with serious behavior problems. Rescuing Penny Jane is the story of her adventures with these remarkable dogs, from working at a shelter, helping dozens of animals discover that the right person can give them love, hope, and a whole new life, to adopting two rescue dogs of her own and fostering half a dozen more. In addition to her touching, funny, and insightful anecdotes, Sutherland travels the country talking to leading shelter experts, animal behaviorists, and activists.
An affecting, entertaining portrait of the relationships between shelter dogs and those who care for them, Rescuing Penny Jane is a book that dog lovers and all who care about animals will treasure.
