Sinopsis

The Paliser Case (1919) is focused on money, deceit and murder by a once popular American writer. Tragedy and society comedy, and the blasé life style of millionaires are overlaid with the plight of a young singer pursued by a crazy rich boy.Edgar Saltus (1855-1921) was an American writer known for his elaborate prose style. His works reportedly paralleled those by European decadent authors such as Huysmans, D'Annuzio and Wilde. Saltus wrote two books of philosophy, The Philosophy of Disenchantment and The Anatomy of Negation. Saltus fell into obscurity after his death. Andrei Andreiech, a young Russian-English man, finds himself in the company of the three lovely daughters of the Bursanov family. Their father, Nikolai Vasilievich, is a man of potential means, but besides a large house most of his wealth is tied up in a series of non-productive Siberian goldmines. Still, the possibility of future income is enough to keep him afloat, along with his daughters, his lover, his ex-wife, and a whole series of extended family members and hangers-on. Both Nikolai and his retinue seem locked into a holding pattern, their lives unable to progress without some inflection point that never seems to arrive. Futility is William Gerhardie's first novel, published while he was attending Oxford after a stint in the British army. Like his protagonist, he was born and raised in Russia, then joined the English army as an officer, but he was careful to note that "the 'I' of this book is not me." The book was critically acclaimed: both Evelyn Waugh and H. G. Wells championed him, and Edith Wharton wrote a preface for this edition. It has been cited as one of the earliest appearances of a theme that would become recurrent in twentieth century literature: that of "waiting" (a theme made most famous in Beckett's Waiting for Godot ). William Gerhardie (died 1977) was a significant literary figure of the 20th century. Their work has endured across generations and continues to be read and studied worldwide. As a work of classic literary fiction, Futility exemplifies the narrative craft and social insight that defined great storytelling of its era. Literary fiction of this period was characterized by careful attention to character psychology, social milieu, and the moral questions that animated public discourse.

Cast out by their town. Trapped by the storm. Judged by the choices they make when survival becomes impossible.

Poker Flat has decided to cleanse itself of every person its respectable citizens consider undesirable. Gambler John Oakhurst, the Duchess, Mother Shipton, and the drunken Uncle Billy are forced from the California mining settlement and sent into the mountains with little food and no shelter.

Along the trail, the exiles encounter the innocent young couple Tom Simson and Piney Woods. But before the travelers can reach safety, a violent snowstorm traps them in an isolated mountain cabin. Their supplies begin to disappear, the snow grows deeper, and hope of rescue fades with every passing day.

As starvation, cold, and betrayal threaten the group, the supposed outcasts reveal unexpected courage, compassion, and sacrifice. In the unforgiving wilderness, the labels imposed upon them by society begin to lose their meaning—and true character is revealed.

Set against the brutal landscape of the California Gold Rush, The Outcasts of Poker Flat is Bret Harte’s enduring story of prejudice, survival, redemption, and humanity found in the most unlikely people.

Narrated by Jim Foster, this dramatic Western classic brings the danger, tragedy, and quiet heroism of Poker Flat vividly to life.

Thirty-three tales gathered from half the world: the hero Makoma and the magic mirror from the Senna country, the Rover of the Plain from the Ba-Ronga of Mozambique, jackal stories from the Berbers of North Africa, Pathan tales told to a British officer on the Indian frontier, Lapland stories of the Stalos, Scandinavian tales from Thorpe, Spanish ones from Fernán Caballero, and Andersen's Ugly Duckling. The orange book was the tenth of Lang's coloured series and leans harder on ethnographers' fieldwork than the early ones; the African stories keep the shape their tellers gave them. Its 53 original illustrations have been carefully restored and coloured for this edition.

Provost Pawkie of Gudetown tells, in his own words and with complete self-satisfaction, how he rose to be chief magistrate and what he did with the office — every stroke of it corrupt and every word of it plausible. Galt failed at business on three continents, founded the Canadian town of Guelph, was recalled in disgrace and did time for debt; he invented the political novel in Scots, and Pawkie is a permanent contribution. Thirty-seven plates, from Wilkie to Turner, catch the weather of Galt's Scotland and beyond: storm scenes, Highland families, a castle in a gale, the everyday bustle of a burgh.

"He wasn't a terrifying ghost; he was a pathetic one. He had forgotten how to haunt."

In the cozy, smoke-filled atmosphere of the Meridian Club, a man named Clayton recounts a remarkable encounter. He recently found himself face-to-face with a ghost—not a shrieking specter, but a shy, stuttering young man who had died of "inanition" and was now failing miserably at being scary. The ghost has forgotten the complex "passes" and gestures required to disappear back into the spirit world. As Clayton attempts to help the spirit regain his "spectral footing," the story takes a turn from the humorous to the chillingly profound, questioning the thin veil between the living and the dead.

A Satire of the Gothic Tradition: Wells subverts every trope of the 19th-century ghost story. His phantom is a "low-grade" spirit who is self-conscious about his lack of haunting skills. By treating the afterlife as a bureaucratic or technical skill that one must master, Wells brings a grounded, modern sensibility to the supernatural, making the ghost's plight relatable and strangely human.

The Fatal Curiosity: The narrative tension peaks when Clayton decided to demonstrate the ghost's secret gestures to his skeptical friends. Wells masterfully builds a sense of dread as the "inexperienced" ghost's struggle becomes a real-world danger. It is a cautionary tale about the arrogance of the living when dealing with the mysteries of the beyond.

Discover the lighter—and darker—side of the supernatural. Purchase "The Story of the Inexperienced Ghost" today and master the pass.
