Sinopsis

This novel of love and literature by the author of Concord “brings to vivid life a fascinating cast of characters” including the Shelleys and Lord Byron (Denise Giardina, author of Emily’s Ghost).   In early nineteenth-century London, five-year-old Mary Godwin, daughter of a philosopher, plays with her sister, mourns her late mother, and marvels as a hot air balloon lands not far from the Thames. Nearby, in Sussex, eleven-year-old Percy Shelley entertains his three sisters by telling them stories and performing tricks with chemicals and fire. A dozen years later, Mary and Percy meet and fall in love in the Godwin bookshop near Black Friar’s Bridge. At first their romance seems doomed: Percy is a well-known atheist and already has a wife, and Mary is only seventeen, under the care of her father and his overbearing second wife. But they consider such impediments trivial and are soon on their way to Ireland, Switzerland, and across Europe (with Mary’s flighty half-sister, Claire, in tow). Upon reaching Lake Geneva they find lodgings near where the notorious poet Lord Byron and his peculiar personal physician, John Polidori, are staying—the same Lord Byron Claire seduced back in London—her reasoning being that if Mary can have a poet, why can’t she? And so begins the summer when Mary Shelley will start writing her novel about a man who brings to life a creature of his own making, Percy and Lord Byron will debate politics and poetry in the midst of lightning storms, Polidori will commence writing his novel about a man with a taste for human blood, and snow will fall in the middle of July.  Praise for the writing of award-winning author Don Zancanella   “Mr. Zancanella’s characters . . . are drawn with remarkable perception and control.” —The New York Times Book Review   “A strong sense of place [and] a subdued sense of humor.” —Western American Literature    “Clever and subtle . . . Polished.” —Publishers Weekly

An illuminating exploration of 31 incredible women—across art, architecture, dance, literature, and more—whose culture-defining contributions have, until now, been overshadowed by their role as "muses" to history's better-known men.  What does it mean to be someone's "muse"? Historically, to be called a “muse” among artistic circles has been marketed as a flattering title. It is a commendation that most often refers to a woman whose vivacity and beauty are the source of inspiration for a (usually) male artist or creator. Perhaps her inspiring presence is even credited in the story of his success. But the very concept of a muse underestimates these women and their abilities. At its root, muse is a support role, the title a consolation prize that claims to recognize a woman’s greatness—but only in her support of another.I'm Not Your Muse reclaims the narrative of 31 of these extraordinary women, from "The Mother of the Movies" Alice Guy-Blaché to Modernist designer Eileen Gray, prima ballerina Maria Tallchief, storied Harlem Renaissance editor Jessie Redmon Fauset, and many more. Each of these women advanced the narrative of culture and society, pushing the boundaries of visual arts, dance and movement, commercial architecture, music, journalism, and the performing arts. Whether by historical accident or cruel design, their contributions have historically been overshadowed by those of their male counterparts, and often collaborators. In this briskly written, incisively researched compendium, author and researcher Lori Zimmer repositions these women as the main characters of their own lives. Each profile is accented with original illustrations—including jaunty portraits in playfully constructed frames—by artist Maria Krasinski. Together, they highlight the contemporary accomplishments and historical legacies of a wide-ranging group of revolutionary women. Featured women include: Louise Blanchard Bethune Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore Minnette de Silva Clara Driscoll Jessie Redmon Fauset Loie Fuller Martha Gellhorn    Eileen Gray Belle da Costa Greene Alice Guy-Blaché Miss La La Edmonia Lewis Neysa McMein Hildreth Meière Lucia Moholy May and Jane Morris    Na Hye-Sŏk Fernande Olivier Pan Yuliang    Ethel Reed    Clara Rockmore    Ada Bricktop Smith Maria Tallchief Alice B. As a child, Lucy Mangan was reading all the time, using books to navigate the challenges and complexities of this world and many others. As an adult, she uses her new relationship with literature to seize upon the most important question: (how) do books prepare us for life?Bookish vividly tells the story of a reader's life from the cusp of teenagehood, when everything—including the way we read—undergoes a not-so-subtle transformation. Lucy vividly recounts her metamorphosis from young bookworm to bookish adult, from the way school curricula impact our relationship with literature, to the growing pains of swapping the pleasures of rereading for those of book-hoarding.Revisiting the books of all genres (from literary novels and historical saga fiction to apocalyptic zombie novels) that ferried her through each important stage of life—falling in love, finding a job, becoming a mother, and navigating grief—Bookish is a coming of age story told through books. It's an ode to our favorite bookish spaces (from the smallest secondhand bookstalls to our favorite libraries, mega-bookshops, and our own bookshelves) and a love story to how books not only shelter our souls through hard times, but also how they help us connect with the people we love through shared stories.

In January of 1934, Admiral Richard E. Byrd began an Antarctic expedition that would change his life forever. Already a celebrated explorer, Byrd's expeditions were media sensations on radio and film. On this trip, Byrd had an audacious undertaking in mind: manning a weather station alone, miles from the American base along the coast, through the harsh Antarctic winter. The solitude would bring enlightenment and personal reckoning for Byrd as he struggled to survive the bitter -70 degree temperatures. "This book is the account of a personal experience," Byrd begins. "so personal that for four years I couldn't bring myself to write it." Despite Byrd's reluctance, the book is a riveting account of survival and endurance. This version of Alone is fully produced with a soundscape of music and atmospheric effects to place you right there with Admiral Byrd through this harrowing adventure. Many voices fill in the other characters that interact with Byrd as he launches his expedition, speaking with him over the shortwave radio. The experience is reflective, beautiful, and gripping. Alone is a survival tale like no other.
