Summary

Grover is a man of small routines, not big responsibilities. When his sister asks him to babysit her two kids, Alex and Jennifer, he reluctantly agrees. It’s just for one night after all. But nothing could have prepared him for what comes next.

In the wake of sudden tragedy, Grover finds himself unexpectedly thrust into the role of guardian. Convinced the children would be better off with their grandmother, he decides to take them on a cross-country road trip to ease them into the idea of their new life.

The roadside attractions aren’t the only big things they encounter on their journey. The trio meet larger-than-life new friends and find themselves embroiled in a media storm as their simple road trip quickly becomes something much bigger. Along the way Grover, Alex and Jennifer begin to confront their grief and fears, and they form an unconventional, yet powerful bond. As past wounds resurface, Grover must face the ghosts he’s long avoided and decide what kind of future he wants - and what kind of future he deserves.

Full of humour, pop culture and heart, BIG THINGS is a story of second chances and family, set against the stunning backdrop of Australia.

So how do I greet the New Millennium? In despair. I'm a single parent, I live with my mother . . . I have a bald spot the size of a jaffa cake on the back of my head . . . I can't go on like this, drifting into early middle-age. I need a Life Plan . . .

The 'same age as Jesus when he died', Adrian Mole has become a martyr: a single-father bringing up two young boys in an uncaring world. It’s June 2012. The magical and slightly cultish River Run swim club is alive with the spirit of fun competition when a perfect storm brews between team moms and best friends Gillian Cloud and Kristy Weinstein. The ghost of family addiction has turned up, looming over their carefully planned pasta parties, tie-dye nights, and pep rallies, forcing them to face their unresolved childhood trauma. Gillian responds by trying to control everyone around her while Kristy relapses into her dangerous addiction to love. Real sparks fly on the night of the derecho—a freak land hurricane—which sweeps through Northern Virginia, knocking out power for days. The storm ignites a tinder box of secrets, leaving Gillian and Kristy alone in the hot dark—their shame their only company. At times humorous and devastating, Swimming with Ghosts is a hauntingly dark, yet uniquely tender story about the various entrapments of addiction and lingering trauma and what it takes to overcome our hidden legacies of disgrace and discover a once unimaginable freedom made possible by confronting life’s greatest storms with the people closest to us.

“With her typically American intrepidness, her thirst for a good story and her power of observation, Hermance closes-in on the Portuguese she encounters along the way, bringing to us a psychological picture of the Portuguese individual and society that you won´t find on expat guides. Lastly, her unusual grasp for ´Portuguese quaintness´ also makes this book worth buying.” David Peres Rebelo

Once upon a time, there was a family: Divya Dugar, her partner Olivier, their tiny hooman Marius, and their three rescue streeties-Tigress, Marcopolo and Pari. They lived in Delhi. And they wanted to go to other places.
So they booked a first-class coupe with the Indian Railways that allowed them to travel with their dogs. The sixsome went on many, many train journeys. It was not just about getting to a place, be it Goa, Rajasthan or Madhya Pradesh, but about seeing it with new eyes-and ears and noses, which is inevitable when half your touring party is canine. As they faced uncanny, hilarious situations and tried their best to grapple with systems designed for human convenience, the high point of the trips was often the adventures in the train compartment, which the dogs made their very own.
A witty, whimsical, wry account of those journeys, accompanied by some stunning photographs, Chaos in a Coupe is a book that travellers, pet parents and anyone who likes a good read will enjoy.
