Beschreibung

Daniel O’Connor has led a remarkable life as a priest, scholar, missionary and teacher. His ten years as chaplain and lecturer in St Stephen’s College, Delhi and his years as Principal of the College of the Ascension, Selly Oak established him as one of the leading scholars of missionary activity during the time of the British Empire and afterwards.

Identifying closely with post-colonialism his writings on C. F. Andrews and Verrier Elwin provide a rich resource for the history of late imperial and early independent India. O’Connor wrote the latest official history of the USPG.

The essays in this book provide an introduction to his many writings, beginning with his early work on the Private Devotions of Bishop John Cosin of Durham and concluding with his magisterial overview of the “geography” of Anglican missions over the centuries. Dan’s own writings are followed by some writings on spirituality by his wife Juliet.

As our nation has experienced a renewal of reckoning with the reality of slavery in our past and the continued struggle for equality and liberation in the present, many previously untold stories have come to light. But not every story. Some histories remain shrouded, waiting for someone to uncover them and make them known. Incredibly, some of them have been hiding in plain sight for decades.

Yonder Come Day brings these hidden histories into the light in an unconventional yet powerful way. Drawing from the recorded interviews of more than 3,000 formerly enslaved people from across the South collected in the 1930s, Jasmine L. Holmes creates a compelling "collective memoir" unlike anything you've read. The story follows Little One, a composite character who guides the modern-day reader through the experience of slavery. As she grows from Little Bit to Lonely One to Lovely One to Grandmama, she exposes both harsh truths and an irrepressible spirit, helping us better understand the love, resilience, and faithfulness necessary to survive the evils of our nation's original sin.

Teachers, historians, and anyone doing the work of reconciliation will find that Yonder Come Day is the vital resource they didn't even know they were missing.

From master storyteller and host of On Being's Poetry Unbound, Pádraig Ó Tuama, comes an unforgettable memoir of peace and reconciliation, Celtic spirituality, belonging, and sexual identity.

"It is in the shelter of each other that the people live." Drawing on this Irish saying, Ó Tuama relates ideas of shelter and welcome to our journeys of life, using poetry, story, biblical reflection, and prose to open up gentle ways of living well in a troubled world.

In the Shelter introduces Corrymeela, the Northern Ireland peace and reconciliation community Ó Tuama led for many years, and throughout the book he reveals the power of storytelling in communities of conflict. From the heart of a poet comes a profound look at the landscapes we all try to inhabit even as we always search for shelter, a place we can call home.

An instant spiritual classic in Ireland and Britain, now brought to the United States.
