The Byzantine-Sassanid Wars were a series of conflicts between two of the most powerful empires of the ancient world: the Byzantine Empire, which was the eastern continuation of the Roman Empire, and the Sassanid Empire, the dominant Persian state in the region. These wars spanned several centuries, with periodic intervals of peace, but the conflicts fundamentally shaped the history of the Middle East and had profound implications for the future of both empires.
The Byzantine Empire, centered around the city of Constantinople, inherited the legacy of Rome after the Western Roman Empire fell in the 5th century. Under the leadership of Emperor Justinian I in the 6th century, the Byzantine Empire reached its greatest territorial extent, but its eastern frontier, bordering the Sassanid Persian Empire, remained a volatile region. The Sassanid Empire, founded by Ardashir I in the 3rd century, was a formidable military power that sought to expand its influence in the East and to challenge the supremacy of Rome and later, the Byzantine Empire.
The conflicts between these two empires were not only territorial struggles but also ideological battles. Both empires sought to exert control over strategic regions, particularly the eastern Mediterranean, the Levant, and Mesopotamia. The Byzantines were primarily concerned with the defense of their empire and their Christian faith, which was a central aspect of their identity. Meanwhile, the Sassanids, who adhered to Zoroastrianism, viewed the Byzantine Empire as a rival both politically and religiously. This religious dimension added complexity to the conflict, as each empire sought to spread and protect its belief system.

Did you know that Loki is the father of the monstrous creatures that are prophesied to kill the gods of Asgard?
When Heimdall blows his horn to signal the beginning of Ragnarök, the gods of Asgard are left with no choice but to face the forces of chaos on the battlefield of Vigrid. This is when Loki and his monstrous sons, Jörmungandr the World Serpent and Fenrir the Giant Wolf, will exact their revenge, a mission they will succeed in, although it will cost their lives. On this day, everyone, including the mightiest of gods, will spill blood on the battlefield. The entire world will perish, leaving only an empty void for life to happen all over again.
The stories and myths of the Norse were passed down by the Vikings in oral tradition until they were recorded in manuscripts by anonymous authors in the mid-13th century. The myths that survived tell the story of how the world was first created by the gods using the dead body of a primeval giant, the existence of the different realms surrounding the universe, and various tales and lore about the gods’ adventures.
Here’s just a small fraction of what you’ll discover:
    • How the body of the primeval giant, Ymir, was used to shape the earth
    • A detailed description of all nine realms in the Norse world and the World Tree, Yggdrasil
    • The famous legend of how Odin lost his eye in exchange for wisdom
    • How Loki tricked the dwarves into creating Mjölnir and other treasures for the gods
    • Three of Loki’s monstrous sons and their roles in killing the gods at Ragnarök

The Picnic - A Dream of Freedom...

In August 1989, a group of Hungarian activists organized a picnic on the border of Hungary and Austria. But this was not an ordinary picnic—it was located on the dangerous militarized frontier known as the Iron Curtain. Tacit permission from the highest state authorities could be revoked at any moment. On wisps of rumor, thousands of East German "vacationers" packed Hungarian campgrounds, awaiting an opportunity, fearing prison, surveilled by lurking Stasi agents. The Pan-European Picnic set the stage for the greatest border breach in Cold War history: hundreds crossed from the Communist East to the longed-for freedom of the West.

Drawing on dozens of original interviews, Matthew Longo tells a gripping and revelatory tale of the unraveling of the Iron Curtain and the birth of a new world order. Just a few months after the Picnic, the Berlin Wall fell, and the freedom for which the activists and refugees had risked imprisonment was suddenly available to everyone. But were they really free? And why, three decades since the Iron Curtain was torn down, have so many sought once again to build walls?

Cinematically told, The Picnic recovers a time when it seemed possible for the world to change. With insight and panache, Longo explores the opportunities taken—and the opportunities we failed to take—in that pivotal moment.
