Summary

Legal Name Changes explores the intricate processes LGBTQ individuals undertake to align their legal identities with their true selves, focusing on the often-challenging journey of name and gender marker changes. This book highlights how seemingly simple legal procedures can be fraught with emotional and bureaucratic hurdles.

The legal landscape governing these changes is far from uniform, varying significantly across jurisdictions and reflecting shifting societal attitudes. One key insight is the potential for discrimination in employment, healthcare, and housing faced by those without accurate documentation.

The book argues that the legal system often inadequately addresses the needs of LGBTQ individuals seeking identity affirmation. It demonstrates how seemingly neutral legal processes can perpetuate systemic inequalities and emotional distress.

The approach taken combines legal scholarship, sociological studies, and personal narratives to provide a comprehensive understanding. The book progresses by first outlining the legal concepts, then exploring lived experiences, and finally analyzing connections to healthcare, employment, and family law, along with offering policy recommendations for a more affirming legal environment.

Do You Worry All the Time?

Have you tried to control your thoughts and get your worrying under control? Did it work? If it didn't, try this simple exercise: Take thirty seconds, right here and now, and don't think about something you recently worried about. Think about anything and everything else, but don't think about that worry.

How did you do? Like most of us, you probably could think of little else except whatever it was you worried about, no matter how hard you tried. This is the problem with trying to control your thoughts: Your attempts to stop worrying very often lead you to repeat and refresh the very worries you're trying to dispel.

Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), a revolutionary new approach to resolving a wide range of psychological problems, can help you break the cycle of chronic worry. ACT stresses letting go of your attempts to avoid, change, and get rid of worry. Instead, it shows you how to accept your feelings as they occur, without judgment. You'll learn to "de-fuse" from your worries, observing and then letting them go. Then you'll explore and commit to acting on your values, thereby creating a rich life for yourself—even with the occasional worry.

    Stones Still Speak - How...

When we first encounter the Bible, we are taught its stories—Adam and Eve, Moses and the Red Sea, David and Goliath, Jonah and the whale, and more. When a story lacks the details we crave, we fill in the blanks—with what we've seen in movies, read in books, and been told by our Sunday school teachers. But there's a better way to encounter the whole story of Scripture: uncovering and understanding the ancient world and the people who experienced biblical events.

In Stones Still Speak, Harvard-trained archaeologist and theologian Amanda Hope Haley scrapes back 2,000 years of misguided cultural interpretations to reveal God's Word in its historical, archaeological, and literary contexts. Far from a dry academic exercise, this process explains how our misunderstandings developed and revitalizes the Scripture you thought you knew, with the greater purpose of encouraging a more intentional, rigorous study of the Bible in your daily life.

This is an audiobook of Bodhi Leaves No. 2 by Kassapa Thera, The Simpler Side of Buddhist Doctrine narrated by Jim Swift. The print edition can be found in the Pariyatti Edition of Collected Bodhi Leaves Vol. 1. The eBook of Bodhi Leaves No. 2 can be downloaded from the BPS website.

    Excerpt:

In the Holy Books are many sermons, long and short, full of advice to the average layman. Notable amongst these is the Sigālovāda Suttanta, known as “the Layman’s Vinaya” which details correct behaviour for the good layman. Excellent though all such sermons are, none can surpass the brief simple appeal of the words to Nakula’s parents, which advise the cultivation of four things: Saddhā, Virtue, Generosity and Wisdom.

A striking thing in the Buddha-dhamma is that here we find naught of “Thou shalt” or “Thou shalt not.” When once it is realized that selfishness and self-indulgence cause all our woe, then a wise one strives for self mastery. Sīla is the mastery of speech and action. Of his own free will, the Buddhist “pledges to observe” this precept of virtue, and that. The minimum number of such precepts of virtue that the good Buddhist should observe is five: (1) I undertake to observe the precept to abstain from destroying the life of beings; (2) from taking things not given; (3) from sexual misconduct; (4) from false speech, and (5) from liquor that causes intoxication and heedlessness.

The Buddhist has no impossible postulates; he tries to see, as his teacher taught, “things as they really are.” He looks at the world around him and sees that all, all is transitory there. He sees that what is transitory is bound to be sad. All that we love is passing away, and such parting from the loved is suffering.  ..."

There is a generosity crisis in North America. The number of individuals giving to charity is on the decline. For nonprofits that rely on the generosity of everyday individuals, this is an alarming statistic. But amidst these challenges, a new opportunity has arisen: the subscription economy has transformed donor behavior and preferences, making recurring giving more accessible than at any other time in history.Dave Raley, with over twenty years of experience in the nonprofit sector, has studied top-performing nonprofits that are successfully tapping into this new kind of giving. As individuals and organizations have embraced subscriptions, consumer trends have changed, and donors are more likely to give on a recurring basis to nonprofits of all types and sizes. This has paved the way for subscription giving, and ultimately, more reliable revenue that can accelerate generosity. In The Rise of Sustainable Giving, Raley shares the core elements of building a thriving sustainable giving program, including:Six key shifts driven by the subscription economyUnderstanding donor motivationCrafting an ongoing value propositionGetting your technology stack rightDesigning and launching your programGrowing your programSustainable giving is more than just inspirational jargon or a lofty idea; it’s a tactical playbook for a new era of fundraising.
