Summary

A revision of the definitive reference, containing plant characteristics, distribution, and medicinal qualities, an updated taxonomy, and fifteen new species.   The Field Guide to Medicinal Wild Plants is the ultimate handbook for identifying and using wild plants for medicinal purposes. This illustrated guide to North American wild medicinals has been a nature classic for over thirty years. In this second edition, David K. Foster revises Bradford Angier's invaluable reference, updating the taxonomy and adding more than a dozen species, including the purple coneflower, popularly known as echinacea, as well as ephedra, jewelweed, goldenseal, and more. Scientific information for a general audience and full-color illustrations combine with intriguing accounts of the plants’ uses, making this a practical guide for anyone interested in the medicinal uses of wild plants.

We've all asked ourselves the question. It's impossible to look up at the stars and NOT think about it: Are we alone in the universe? Books, movies and television shows proliferate that attempt to answer this question and explore it.In Out There, Space.com senior writer Dr. Michael Wall treats that question as merely the beginning, touching off a wild ride of exploration into the final frontier. He considers, for instance, the myriad of questions that would arise once we do discover life beyond Earth (an eventuality which, top NASA officials told Wall, is only drawing closer). What would the first aliens we meet look like? Would they be little green men or mere microbes? Would they be found on a planet in our own solar system or orbiting a star far, far away? Would they intend to harm us, and if so, how might they do it? And might they already have visited?Out There is arranged in a simple question-and-answer format. The answers are delivered in Dr. Wall's informal but informative style, which mixes in a healthy dose of humor and pop culture to make big ideas easier to swallow. Dr. Wall covers questions far beyond alien life, venturing into astronomy, physics, and the practical realities of what long-term life might be like for we mere humans in outer space, such as the idea of lunar colonies, and even economic implications. Dr. Wall also shares the insights of some of the leading lights in space exploration today, and shows how the next space age might be brighter than ever.

Since the 1950s, scientists have attempted to harness nuclear fusion—the process that creates the Sun's energy—to generate near-limitless amounts of electricity. But the fact that we still have no fusion power plants is testament to the complexities of the challenge. Now, the deepening climate crisis means that researchers around the world are in a race to create a mini-Sun here on Earth. The glittering prize is an energy source that emits no greenhouse gases and could solve energy equity and supply issues at a stroke. Sharon Ann Holgate, a former Young Professional Physicist of the Year, tells the compelling story of the ongoing scientific quest for a revolutionary new era of green-energy production.

FINALIST: (1) 2020 (14TH) ANNUAL NATIONAL INDIE EXCELLENCE AWARDS; (2) 2021 NEXT GENERATION INDIE BOOK AWARDS
How different might the history of our species have been had our hunter-gatherer forebears failed to migrate out of Africa in time to survive 70,000 years ago when threatened by extinction due to climate change brought on by the last ice age? Simply put, we would not exist. Now, similarly threatened, we too must act quickly if we hope to survive. Yet despite all the signs of a potential greenhouse mass extinction, again due to climate change, this threat is still being ignored.
Like the passengers aboard the Titanic, who knew that in two hours and forty minutes they would either be in a lifeboat or drowning in the cold waters of the Atlantic but waited a full hour before taking action-we too are not getting our lifeboats ready.
This book is a wake-up call and looks to evolution itself for guidance on how to avoid extinction.
Evolution, the author claims, seems firmly on the side of survival and has left Evolutionary Survival Patterns-Adapt, Innovate, Mature, and Migrate to Survive or go Extinct. Survival depends on how we adapt and innovate as well as on whether we can mature and migrate. Unfortunately, misuse of the Adapt and Innovate patterns over the last two hundred years has driven us to the brink of self-extinction. What can be done?
Survival, this book claims, will not emerge from the products of adapting and innovating-science, technologies, and inventions-but by migrating and maturing to evolutionary maturity-maturing beyond the ability to drive ourselves and other species to extinction-and by restoring Earth's habitats, species and a return to sustaining our lives from within Earth's ecosystems, as our forebears did. And failing these, like them, we must be free, willing, and able to choose to migrate-to other planets if necessary-to survive.

  • Summary Update and Expansion: Life Itself by Francis Crick - DNA Not From Earth! - cover

    Summary Update and Expansion:...

I selected Francis Crick’s Life Itself to update, summarize, and expand because he promoted the idea that DNA did not first evolve on Earth. If true, DNA’s alien origin would be one of the most important realizations in all Human history. Life, according to Crick, began somewhere else where conditions were more favorable and, with the help of advanced intelligence, seeded Earth through panspermic, “seeds everywhere,” events. This has been labeled as the “seeded hypothesis.”
If DNA originated elsewhere, it reflects not only upon our beginnings as a form of “alien” or “alien hybrid” but also our future, which may include merging with one or more advanced civilizations. We may, indeed, one day, meet our “makers,” or at least some of their descendants.
This ebook summarizes Crick’s work which previously could only be found, to the best of my knowledge, in printed form, adds the evidence of signatures and hidden mathematical and pictorial codes from DNA for his theory, offers general updates on cosmological data that Crick did not have at his disposal, addresses the subject of the surprising Last Universal Common Ancestor for life, and briefly explores our government’s about-face on the subject of Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon (UAP) and bizarre materials found at their landings which they admit having and examining.
