Summary

Sumerian Cities explores the groundbreaking urban planning and societal innovations of ancient Sumer, revealing how these Mesopotamian metropolises laid the foundation for modern city living. The book examines how Sumerian city-states in the Fertile Crescent tackled challenges of resource management, communication, and social organization.

For instance, their ingenious irrigation systems, essential for sustaining large populations, predate modern water management strategies by millennia. Furthermore, the development of cuneiform writing wasn't just for record-keeping; it also served as a tool for literature and legal codes, reflecting a sophisticated cultural expression.

The book uniquely connects irrigation, writing, and governance to showcase Sumerian urban society. Structured to provide a comprehensive overview, it begins with geographical and historical context, then explores irrigation techniques, the evolution of cuneiform writing, and Sumerian governance.

By synthesizing archaeological findings and translations of cuneiform texts, Sumerian Cities provides a holistic view. The book considers how Sumerian innovations have influenced urban centers worldwide while also addressing the limitations of Sumerian urbanism.

As heard on NPR’s “This American Life,” unlikely friendships challenge every kind of bias, to offer hope that our societies can heal
Much has been written about our polarized media, social bubbles, and intractable biases. Award-winning journalist Bastian Berbner circled the world to find a different narrative. In Search of Common Ground is his profound collection of true stories that prove it is possible to mend even our fiercest divides.
In Arizona, a former neo-Nazi befriends his Black parole officer. In Germany, an older couple dread the arrival of their new Roma neighbors—but are moved upon meeting them to offer help and become strong supporters. In Ireland, we see one friendship change the world when a gay-rights activist overturns a conservative mailman’s homophobia—and together, they help sway public opinion to legalize gay marriage. Other gap-bridging stories include:
Young Democrats and Republicans (United States),
A Danish policeman and a Muslim boy in danger of radicalization (Denmark), and
    A neo-Nazi and a Palestinian prisoner (Germany).
With added historic and sociological research, Berbner gets to the root of what pushes people apart, and shows that we can dissolve divisions by simply meeting face to face. This is essential, uplifting reading for everyone who aspires to live without hate.

"Stop using pornography, without feeling like a victim or experiencing deprivation." This book will enable you to quit your online sex addiction immediately, painlessly, and permanently, without willpower or any sense of loss or sacrifice. It will neither judge nor shame you, nor push you to take painful measures. The Easy-Peasy method, based on Allen Carr's "The Easy Way to Stop Smoking," views pornography as a psychological dependency. The method focuses on changing the way porn users perceive their habit and helps them realize that internet pornography offers no benefits.
EasyPeasy works metaphorically like a magic button. For me and many others, the method felt like magic because quitting was so simple and enjoyable! The idea that something is missing when you don't watch pornography is the voice of your brainwashing. By reading this book, you will break through this brainwashing. There is so much to gain and so little to lose. You should dare to read this book.

As we delve deeper into this topic, we will navigate the intricate web of influences that drive these behaviors. From the powerful force of peer pressure to the allure of projecting a particular social image, urban youth often find themselves at a crossroads where their choices are influenced by a myriad of factors. The accessibility of vaping products and drugs in urban environments, coupled with the lack of awareness about their consequences, further complicates the landscape. Moreover, we will explore how, for some urban youth, vaping and substance use serve as coping mechanisms for the stress, trauma, and mental health challenges they face. The quest for social acceptance and recognition may sometimes lead them down a path of experimentation that can have lasting implications.
This exploration is not merely an academic exercise but a crucial endeavor to shed light on the dynamics of urban youth culture and to provide insights that can inform prevention and intervention strategies. By understanding the motivations behind these behaviors, I aim to empower educators, parents, community leaders, and the youth themselves to make informed decisions and foster healthier environments. Each chapter of this book will delve into a different facet of this complex issue, offering perspectives, research findings, and strategies for addressing the challenges posed by vaping and substance use among urban youth. Through knowledge and understanding, we can work collectively to support urban youth in making choices that lead to healthier and more positive outcomes.
Join me on this journey of exploration and discovery as we seek to comprehend why urban youth smoke vapes and do drugs to impress their peers and, in doing so, strive to create a better future for them and their communities.

How do people talk about words? This work explores naming constructions such as This formation is called a "coral reef" that are used to introduce lexicalized concepts like coral reef through metalinguistic reference. Drawing on the theoretical foundations in philosophy of language as well as recent work in semantics and pragmatics, experimental evidence from corpus analyses and psycholinguistic experiments-including self-paced reading and eye-tracking data-uncover the linguistic and cognitive processes behind these naming constructions. Special attention is given to the use and processing of quotational constructions during reading. Bridging (psycho)linguistics and philosophy of language, this interdisciplinary work offers new insights into how people use quotational constructions to talk about language, and how readers interpret and process naming constructions with and without quotation marks.
